What is the point?

If the name of the game is to be the best, there is a distinct irony in that they are by no means anywhere near the best!!

If you can't compete at the top level (Olympics) then you shouldn't be competing in a worldwide event at all!!

They are milking olympic funds for something that no one gives a toss about!!

How do you know its a case of"that no one gives a toss about"? Why do we watch the Albion? If the name of the game is to be the best?

I dare say it means a hell of a lot to the competitors and to many other disabled people around the world so it's not doing any harm is it?

Why dont we remove wheelchair access across the country whilst were at it, thats milking our taxes isnt it? Braille can go too, most of us dont even use it! Lets completely ignore those less able than ourselves and sit in the pub watching Jamaicans run fast. :tosser:

To think that we are lucky just to have the option of being able to watch the Paralympics on tv (that is if we choose to do so). The saddest thing is that many of the world's disabled will not even have the chance to watch it on tv because of how poor they are.

Is it all worthwhile for the competitors ? ... Of course it is.

Is it worth televising so much of it ? ... I dont think so.
My sentiments precisely. At the end of the day, it's a decent competition but it should be treated like any other niche sport. I don't really think it warrants the coverage it receives if I'm honest.

Why don't you just shut the f*** up. These competitors have more guts; talent & dignity than you will ever have - even in your wildest dreams. :tosser:

But is it not more important that somebody who may have suffered a catastrophic event in their life, such as losing a limb, or being paralysed or blinded, has something to strive for?

Let's be honest, disabled people often have a pretty shit time of it in everyday life, for trivial reasons that you probably don't even consider, and the Paralympics just might be a chance to show the world what they are capable of, rather than what they aren't, for once?

Nobody's suggesting that a 100m runner with cerebral palsy, for example, is the fastest man on earth, but I suspect if you asked one of the competitors, that's not what it's about.

What makes the premiere competition of sport for the disabled a niche sport? All coverage is good coverage. Hell, many of the Olympic sports suffer or have suffered through lack of funding, I can't imagine people are willing to throw as much money at the Paralympic events/competitors.

A huge number of people have various disabilities and have been marginalised for too long.

How would Simster measure how much coverage it deserves? A quick 30 minute highlight session every other night? We don't want it to impede on your regular viewings, do we?

Well actually I don't happen to find it particularly interesting viewing. In fact I find it a bit dull to watch. Is that a crime then? Maybe we should all be FORCED to watch the paralympics? So yes, personally I'd rather it wasn't impeding regular viewing because I'm not interested - but that's just me. I'm not belittling any of the competitors or anyone who genuinely does find it a good watch. Indeed, I've actually paid money to watch the Paralympics live in 2000, so don't get all sanctimoneous and preachy with *me* please.

I think there are two issues here.
1) People should not try to put down someones achievements in trying to be the top of their sport, be it in the main olympics or the paralympics.
2) Should the paralympics be televised on mainstream BBC when the England games are only on Setanta? I dont know?

According to this thread-starter, there's also no point in watching the women in several of the (regular) Olympic events, as they won't ever be better than the men in most of them.

Also, why bother watching people running, to the fastest - when one could just get on a motorbike and spank the lot of them! High jump? Pah, take a rocket and your in outer space - what's the point of using a POLE to get over a stick when you can use a helicopter?

so, because i post what i believe to be a mildly amusing picture which is appropriate to contents of the thread, i have no sensible thoughts on this (and i would guess you feel any) subject? yes, nice theory.

It wasn't.

Special Olympics = Event for those with mental disabilities
Paralympics = Event for those with physical disabilities.

Fairly different, to be honest.

So because YOU don't enjoy watching it, you think it doesn't warrant the coverage it gets?

Well done for parting with some cash. I am sure the over-exposed athletes are eternally grateful.

Spot on. There are very obviously these two separate issues here. However some people on here are deliberately confusing the two in an attempt to justify their pious and sanctimoneous drivel.

I dont find it particularly interesting viewing. However some of the posters appear to be saying that it should not be televised. How would Albion fans feel if they might have the chance to watch there team on the box? Only to be told we are in a minority and therefore it was not important enough to be screened?

I do think the Beeb tend to be patronising when it comes to the Paralympics tho.

The coverage is over the top. And the Beeb's token paralympian Tammi Grey-Wotsit is ever-present.

Their intentions are entirely honourable. But really, it should be on BBC3 or BBC4. I mean, most of us couldn't give a shit about our NON-Paralympics BMX bizers or windsurfing gold medallists or that size sixteen lass who's a bit good at swimming.
