BBC Sport - Football - Football League to meet over parachute payments

Richard Scudamore, chief executive of the Premier League, said: "It's a genuine attempt to help the Football League after our international TV rights turned out to be better than we expected.

"By doing it this way, everyone is better off, including the non-parachute clubs who would then share the Football League's TV money between them."

So he wants to double the length of time of parachute payments for clubs who are relegated making it even less of a level playing field but that's okay because everyone gets more money? I've not ever read anything so ridiculous.

Premier League clubs will discuss plans to double the amount of parachute payments from two to four years at their annual general meeting in June.

Sky Sports News chief news reporter Bryan Swanson understands it's one of a number of options under review.

The discussions are part of the Football League Solidarity Deal - which is discussed every three years.

The solidarity money for the Football League includes parachute payments, youth development and community projects.

At the moment any relegated club receives £12million a year for two seasons.

That figure is likely to increase to £16million a season, whatever is decided in June.

Clubs that would benefit from a doubling of the parachute payment would include Portsmouth, who could be relegated to the Championship this weekend.

AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGHHHH

Does he genuinely believe people will swallow that tripe? Hoping that we don't realise that it is nothing but protecting the Premier League and clubs that have overspent getting up there and trying desperately to stay there?

Its almost a charter to ENCOURAGE overspending.
"Don't worry about it, if it all goes tits up then we're rolling in parachute cash for years anyway".

The January window will go mental with clubs in danger of dropping out of the Prem spunking money everywhere to try and stay up. In the long term, this is going to exacerbate the problem not resolve it.

There was an interesting article in When Saturday Comes about this parachute payments thing. Obviously everyones made the point that it basically is trying to make a more exclusive member ship of the Premiership. However, it was mostly about the fact that by giving some clubs loads more money the Premiership were aiming to make the Championship a less exciting and competitive league, by making it more like the top flight where only a few clubs would win it. Apparently they're worried about fans turning away from Prem because it's so un-competitive.

 Why can't you just fix your f***ing league rather than trying to mess up ours as well you absolute greedy c unt. Seriously, it's just so depressing just how far these people will go to spite football fans all over the country just to make even more money.

Isn't this the deal that's linked with football governance, and would mean Championship clubs have to reveal who owns them?

Including LEEDS.

Or have I got this mixed up with something else?

Will the Football League counteract this by agreeing providing that clubs who get relegated and go into administration or trade for that season showing a loss are automatically relegated to Div 2.

If I recall correctly from last year with Brum got promoted at the first time of asking, we should get the parachute payments as Newcasdle and WBA got promoted on their first season. - Can anyone confirm

*By we should get i mean spread out over each league club

Good point.
Its 4 years worth of payments thats just been ratified, isn't it (£16m + £16m + £8m + £8m). Presumably once a club gets relegated and then spends its way back up, the parachute payments stop immediately and what they WOULD have got is distributed to the FL clubs ?

Exactly. Although im obviously not sure of the new ruling with regards if parachute payments are still spread over other clubs if said club gets promoted immediatly

Well however this pans out, this whole scheme sucks the big one.
A budget of £48m over 4 years is LIGHT YEARS away from what other clubs in the FL can compete with.

So the temptation to do a Leeds / Soton / Pompey / Palace (take your pick) and over-extend to try to get at least ONE season on the gravy train, thus securing your budget for at least the next 4 years, will be enormous.

Clubs outside this cosy arrangement will inevitably fall short (or bankrupt themselves trying to bridge the gap), and we're going to end up with the same half-dozen clubs yo-yo'ing between the Prem and the Championship.

Genius. Well done everyone.

Scudamore said...

"Whilst many clubs expressed concerns about the proposals, their acceptance was considered the only viable way forward."

The Premier League reportedly planned to stop solidarity payments if the 72 clubs rejected the proposals and said it was a take-it-or-leave it offer.

Exactly. This doesn't just encourage the Prem clubs to spend buckloads they can't afford, but will give a massive incentive for Championship sides to do likewise. Cardiff are flat broke, spent MILES above what they can afford, and have yet again got their winding up order put back because "an investor is just about to come in" .... or more likely, "we could be about to win a couple of games that gets us one year of Premiership gravy train money, followed by 4 years of parachute payments.

Fecking madness. Clubs no longer just need to stay in the Prem for their financial future, but they are gambling as much as they can get away with, getting as far into debt as they can manage in the desperate hope of reaching the Premiership for that magical one season, which will change their finances for 5 years. If they then get tempted to keep spending and trying to stay there, then you have a Pompey.

It's all got a bit disgusting really, hasn't it.

Fucks sake. How much longer do we have to put up with a few pricks trying to f***ing ruin football for everyone?

To rub salt in the wound, the absolute cretins that run the BBC have decided to run with the 'Ancelotti to Plot Chelsea Deominance' story as their headline, whilst the potentially cataclysmic news for the whole Football league is the fourth story. It's this kind of bullshit that means people don't give enough of a f*** about the fact that the sport is getting progressively ruined.

FUCKS SAKE! :US:
