I hope this hasnt been mentioned before but the search facility on NSC is not very good.at least on my tablet.

I am happy, yet somehow also sad, to report that an NSC search on 'paper bags' returned 6 pages of results in 0.01 seconds.

You have been charged 5p for this service.

I find plastic bags handy, I have loads of them at home that I use for walking the dog and taking stuff to work, so at least I recycle them in my own way!

The 5p charge is just another way for 'them' to make money IMO, the environment thing, although true, is just another way for shops to make money. Do the shops give the 5p to any environmental causes?

I think he was considering the latter when he bought the lingerie:drool: I do love BG, his posts remind me of the letters section in Viz :clap2:

Which is why I have my doubts about this story.

There is a voluntary levy which is used to "support good causes". Whether the shops actually stump up remains to be seen. We could always ask Mr Barber what happens at the Albion.

My guess is the majority of shops wouldnt opt to give any money to the environment, especially the 'mom and pop' stores...

It doesn't have to be to the environment. Argos for example has chosen macmillan or similar as their initial good cause. I would guess other large retailers will align themselves with similar charities. For smaller retailers the decision to charge and what.they choose to do with that charge is voluntary

Seems like a 5p charge is the way forward to make stupid people have a word with themselves. 5p congestion charge to drive your car through central Brighton anyone?

Lingerie? Wouldn't it fit in your pocket.

I usually think people are being a bit rude when they accuse BG of being a wind up account, having my doubts now.

Carrier bags aside, I find it quite refreshing that at Bensgrandads ripe old age that his wife is still wearing lingerie! Most ladies of that age would be wearing granny pants and a tenalady!

I fully understand and agree with the charges for plastic bags but what about the old fashioned paper bags which can be recyled? I went into BHS in Churchill Sq to buy some lingerie for wife and after not wishing to buy a plastic bag I was given the clothes in my hand to walk up Western Rd to meet wife who had a shopping bag. Had no option than to buy a plastic bag. In my youth that would have been put into a paper bag as apparently Primark with their cheap clothes do so why has no effort been made by other shops to reintroduce paper bags. Rant over.

I bet you TRIED it on FIRST

What am I doing wrong with the search as I entered both paper bags and plastic bag tax and numerous threads came up but none related to either subject in fact 3/4 of the threads were from within the last 36 hours on various subjects. One more example lady in JD Sports today bought goods to the value of nearly £50 why could the shops not have discretionary power from their HO to give 5p discount on a spend if above a certain level ie goods value £50 so customer pays goods £49.95 plus 5p for a bag. Total spend £50. Or like Primark put the clothes etc in paper bags.

Shops that have more than 250 staff (altogether not in just 1 store) have to charge at least 5p per bag. Other shops can choose to if they want. The money goes to charity.
