They've got players with nearly 200 PL appearances playing between them. I think our squad has 1 solitary appearance for about 20 mins. They've got a lot more experienced side out than us.

I thought the game was a great advert for PL2. The right balance of technical ability, intensity and competitiveness.

The average age of the Palace starting line up was nearly two years higher than ours, 21.7 vs 19.8, so I think it was a great performance considering, despite the result.

Even though Palace had four over age outfield players in their starting line up, I believe they could actually have had a fifth under the new rules.

You are correct. With the change to making it an U21 competition they’ve increased the number of over age outfield players allowed to 5, it was 3 previously. Teams can also field an overage goalkeeper in addition to the 5 outfield players.

Just bring back the football combination league , that was competitive, most teams had a few kids , a few coming back from injury and a few players on the fringes of the first team. With the squads these teams have they surly can play a full team under 23 as well ( I would prefer under 21 as if you can’t make the first team by then you should be looking elsewhere)

I'd rather it stayed as a dedicated league focused on youth development.

Premier League 2 has been reclassified to an under 21s competition this season. I believe the cut off date for those to be considered U21 is the same date as for the Premier League 25 man squad. I don't think its a good idea allowing up to half the outfield players to be overage though. It should be reduced back to 3, but with a caveat that players between 21 and 23 don't count as overage if they've played less than a certain number of first team games, not just PL but at any level of League 2 and above. A similar appearance rules exists for the academy teams taking part in the Football League Trophy.

I like the idea of it being U21 instead of U23 - it aligns it with the EFL trophy or whatever it's called. Also, 23 year olds really should be playing senior football - if not up to PL standard then somewhere further down the food chain. Quite agree that five over-age players plus an over-ade GK is way OTT though. Three (inclusive of GK) is plenty.

If it turns out teams are routinely playing the maximum number of overage players permitted then it needs a rethink, but I doubt that will prove to be the case. One of Palace's overage players last night was only 22, so they were meeting your proposed rules. I think maxing out on older players will very much be the exception.
