I was told on talksport that Brighton changed their name from dolphins to seagulls in response to the Palace eagles.

It was suggested that was silly, and a more ferocious bird should have been used, as an eagle will always win if they choose to have a scrap.

I watched the game on Sky last night, and they did a feature on how the rivalry came about, and they got it wrong, as do most media reports. It didn’t ‘start’ with Mullery and Venables being rivals and the 76 Cup game, it started when they were relegated in 74, and we were their first or second game in the old Third division. They came down mob handed, acting billy big bollox, and we didn’t let them get away with it. Loads of trouble before, during, and after the match, and, for me, that’s when the bad blood started.

Finally someone has got it right! It was in 1973, when we had just been relegated from the second division and they had just come down from the first division. But the first league game of the following season was a bigger occasion, of course. They basically played us off the park but Ian Mellor nicked the only goal.

On the subject of derbies v rivalries, in most derbies the two teams have distinctly different colours (Arsenal v Tottenham, Everton v Liverpool, Celtic v Rangers, Scummers v Skates) and so teams almost never wear away kits. Rivalries are different (Liverpool v Manchester United, Albion v Palace).
