Palace are in a catch 22 situation , spend money on players to avoid relegation or spend money on Smellhurst before the stadium's safety certificate is amended and capacity reduced because it is unsafe (The Goldstone ended up in state of disrepair when Archer & Bellotti tried to kill the club)

Half the Goldtone terraces on the East were shut by the late 80's after the Albion suffered a dip in attendances. Football was poor for attendances in the 80s. Not sticking up for Archer but lets not re write history - Archer did enough to our club without the need to pin on him things he didnt do!
As for palace? Well they share their catchment area with other (proper) London clubs and they are an irrelevance in London. They do have a good fan base but it does not have the same natural regional fanbase that the Albion is lucky to have. However, when they do well they will turn up.
Palace also have never lost their ground and never really been truly up against it like us. No idea how they would have survived if they had to ground share 140 mile round trip whilst in the lower division, but I still think if someone gets it right at Palace then there is a half decent rival to be had at Selhurst.

The terracing in parts of the Chicken Run was crumbling away , the crush barriers rusting to f*** and never repaired also played a part in the Goldstone having its capacity reduced. Archer didn't want to plough any of his own money into the club , it was all done on loan agreements and financing. The same thing could happen at Smellhurst , for instance what happens if the Arthur Wank stand is condemned under health & safety issues and the capacity is reduced to 16,000 until remedial works are carried out ?
Archer did put his own money into the club. The club owed him £1.4 million and He wrote off £700,000 when DK took over.

You will find that Albion's deficit was about £8 million last season and Barber is charged with reducing it, and fast. The fact that so many stewards were employed last season (many still seemed to be over-populating the car park again on Saturday) is not lost on Barber. Tony Bloom is picking up the tab at present and doesn't want to continue doing so.

It is relatively easy to close this sort of gap when you have 25k paying punters per match and a full year of operational experience behind you in a new stadium. In fact around 10% of that will be instantly recovered with the transport charge for instance.
I agree with you about the transport charge. That will bring in (£30 x (say) 22,000) = £600,000, but our wage bill has gone up significantly this year too.

Sorry , I thought any money put into the club was by means of loans secured on the freehold of The Goldstone and his business empire (Focus) rather than writing out cheques. I knew he was paid £700k as a "golden f***-off" to clear the debt.

That's not my understanding. When DK acquired 49% of the Albion in 1997, Archer also had 49%. Both men agreed to put in £1.4 million to finance the Albion's losses whilst at Gillingham. DK then persuaded Archer in 2002 to accept half of this sum and sever his links with the club, to which Archer agreed.
DK then had to raise the money from the likes of Norman Cook, the owner of Hove Car Wash, the proceeds of the Cup Final and other local businessmen.
Those NSC'ers who criticise DK for the work he has done on behalf of the club need their bumps felt IMO. He may be a guilty of talking the hind leg off a donkey, but his plusses far outweigh his minuses.

Our wage bill will be nowhere near the bigger clubs in this division, in fact probably comparable to Palace if not less with so many of our div 1 squad still here, but our gates will be in the top five. Out matchday earning potential is probably number one. As a result we have all the tools to fix the gap if managed well . We need to let four or five of the squad move on too to sort wages. Harleys 8k a week for example, although finding a buyer to cover that weekly wage is another thing altogether.
