Palace fans can be proud of how they support their team for sure, but in modern football driven by money and elite talent, fans play next to bugger all role as the 12th man.

Palace have overachieved, they picked a promotion specialist in Ollie to get them up and a survival specialist in Pulis to keep them there, in both instances the Palace board acting decisively and cleverly to minimise the transition strain. The fans were neither here or there in both cases, they were on Ollie's back for the run-in that got them promoted and I'd be willing to bet they would have picked a lot of managers over Pulis (as no doubt we would have).

We have underacheived because our two biggest architects Bloom and Gus fell out, and it looks as though Bloom has deepened that screw-up by picking a guy who has not got the best out of an expensively assembled (by our standards) squad this season. As fans we have played no role in any of that drama.

I thought it was Nathan Jones who was saying in the "Argus" recently that the Albion fans could and should be the club's 12th man...and that's the difference. A lot of the 30,000 or hwever many you get at tthe AMEX are "fickle fans" who go to see Albion win and get dislllusioned when they struggle. And as I've said on anothjer thread, other teams aren't intimidated by the ground, just as Southampton's weren't when they switched from the hell of The Dell to St. Mary's. You haven't replced "Fortress Withdean" with "Fortress AMEX" yet, have you?

I have to sa that I think "The Argus" plays a part in the dramas at Falmer, their continual search for 6/7 copy must put a strain on the club's PR department. So many crass comments have come from current and former players and management, many of them I'm sure they regretted when they saw them in print.

Tony Clueless.

They have about 35% possession in their games, they get lots of men behind the ball, break with pace and work hard on set pieces. It's worked for them, but unless Pulis has a shed load of money in the summer, everyone will work them out for next season.

It probably didn't take much to galvanise the dressing room after the start they had. Great job he's done, a brilliant potential survival story, but if we thought our football was boring, crikey, I can't believe anyone saying they'd like Clueless here.

His record isn't as glorious as people think either. His gross spending at Stoke was huge. He outspent Liverpool, and didn't bring through any youngsters in his entire time at Stoke, their outgoing sales were appalling, he simply didn't improve any footballers.

Mark Huges has come in, Stoke are playing better football, and look like achieving a higher position than Pulis ever managed.

He's doing a fantastic rescue job for them, but I really believe TB has a vision for us as a footballing purist club and a reputation that will go before us. You don't get that appointing baseball cap wearing dinosaurs.

I don't know Stoke that well but Pulis (hopefully) will make use of the South London Academy, rather than spending megabucks. Interesting that on Saturday incidentally Wilf was subbed by..Craig Noone. Maybe he wasn't motivated enough against his old team... or was it an injury?

**cough** Russell Slade *cough**

I'm not sure what you expected from Pulis, to come to a side who EVERYONE (including Palace fans) said were destined for the drop and turn things around is manager of the year worthy.

Don't be so quick to judge our style of play, we do give up possession but given that our defence is the 6th best in the division and would have been even better had Pulis been here all season, I don't think you can simply suggest we'll get found out next season. He most certainly won't get a lot of money in the summer but given that we only spent a few million on Hennessey, Ledley and Dann, I don't think he really needs to either.

For all your possession, I wouldn't mind betting you've had less shots on target than us on average. Ask any Swansea fan how much they've enjoyed their style of play this season, apart from a unique Europa League experience, they've had a dreadfully dull season.

If you happen to get promoted sometime in the future, good luck trying to stay up during your maiden season by playing Barcelona type football.

Despite Pulis' reputation, there's only been two or three games in which we've played that style of football, and it didn't work for us. When we beat Chelsea the other week it was them who resulted to hoofing it. It's all about having a strong defence.

So you agree then - Palace have overachieved because of Pulis. The question wasn't about what he did at Stoke, although I note that he got them promoted to the Premier League and to an FA Cup final.

I have to chuckle at the spin of the palace fans. They think its their "great support". This is the same Crystal Palace that had to beg people to pay to watch them in the Championship and had about 13000 to pay plus a load of two for one freebies and away fans to make up the numbers! Now they play Arsenal and they turn up to bang a drum they think they are the worlds greatest supporters, whilst Brighton quietly pack in 28,000 in the Championship against Yeovil. Brighton always have under achieved, hopefully Bloom will get tired of it and the fans will start to expect the success that support at Brighton's level demands. This isnt the 60's anymore, biog crowds would accept lower league football without a massive grumble but people want some jam with their bread these days. As for palace well, it is right to say that if a club who get 13000 to pay through the door iun the championship can expect success then Brighton certainly should. We might also want to ask ourselves how clubs like Wimbledon (the old one) and Wigan have lifted the FA Cup and we have not. Maybe Brighton's players might want to start to over achieve for once? I wont hold my breath tho'.

When will you realise that large attendances don't equal success?

Have you really not got anything better to do?

I'm a Brighton fan mate, I have worked that out, as had my dad before me. What I point out is that smaller clubs are doing better than us, and have been more successful. It is something we accept or do something about, I choose the latter. I hope Bloom does.

Have you had a look at http://www.european-football-statistics.co.uk/england.htm

The important stat about Brighton is that you have never (except when Brighton had a limited withdean capacity) had higher gates than us when in the same division. Brighon spent 30 years going downhill and the last 100 years in the lower leagues except a few seasons from 79 to 83. Despite that Brighton have before now had big support. This is not the first time Brighton have been the top 10th/11th best supported club in the country - despite not playing top flight football. But our success is limited to one Charity Shield/ Champions of England in 1910 and one FA Cup runners up. Whilst clubs with smaller support, like palace 13000 paying Championship support, and Wigan have had more success. This is not about you. Its abut us, and its time us fans simply started to ask the question, why can't we at least achieve our potential for oncve or even, how about we over achieve for once. Your Championship support was not of the size where you should have Premier League ambition, well not in front of the likes of Brighton, Forest, Leeds and Leicester anyway. You are a club that should be grateful, without expectation.

The question was whether the fans had made the difference! I merely reacted to the Pulis love-in that seemed to ensue thereafter claiming we should have him here and that he's apparently this managerial genius.

As well as getting them promoted, they also sacked him, and he also spent £80m without hardly anything back through development and coaching, and had a highest place finish of 11th. Over his second reign at Stoke, his net spend was £120m more than Arsenal, and £92m more than Everton.

His saving of Palace will go down as one of his best achievements, mainly because there isn't a long list. The BBC seem to love him though.

With respect, at times under Pulis, we've played better football than we had at any time since Holloway implemented his style.

We're not Barcelona, but we'd easily pass for a lesser Dortmund. Who if you watch regularly, don't blind teams with football. But are capable of passing. They will run more miles than you, and counter attack with strength (Ledley, KG, Puncheon) and the pace (and strength) of Bolasie and Jerome.

It's very effective and despite the odd dour draw at Sunderland and painful play vs Newcastle, it's been entertaining to watch.

And you mention Stoke, they haven't played great football. They hoofed it as much as any at Selhurst. And since Pulis joined, we've averaged the 8th most points, and the 3rd least goals. For a back 5 playing in the Championship last year, that's damn good.
