Some interesting observations here.

Yes Roy probably is the best option right now, hopefully taking Paddy under his wing and showing him the ropes until he can take over on his own.

Loz made a good comparison with our friends at Charlton, who became too big for their boots and wanted to push on to the next level, so got rid of Curbishley, and have gone downhill ever since

What is the expectation now for Brighton? After qualifying for Europe, does that mean the target is more than just staying up each season, like the other 12 or 13 clubs? Is a place in the Premier League now a given now, like a Spurs or Chelsea? Is it all about pushing on now, and always looking up rather than down?

Just curious, as I do read a lot here saying how far behind you have left us.

I'd say this season we'd do well to maintain Top 10, with the added pressure of Europe. I agree, no club, or fan base, can become too big for its boots, but we've suffered enough over the past 25 years, or so, so allow us a little joy in the sunshine we find ourselves in.

I think our ambition has to be a get a Champions League finish within 5 years, I'm not saying we will, but given last season and Europa League football it's got to be an ambition around that.

Finally, I do feel they way our club is structured and run we are better placed than you guys, there just seems more strategic planning and focused execution in our club.

No one thinks we've left you behind. We are well aware this can all go away very easily and quickly.
We are just reassured that our owner seems to have a good handle on what's required to keep the show on the road.
Obviously it's even more pleasing that your owner seems to be the complete opposite, constantly clinging to the familiar, hoping it works again.
It's worked for a decade, so maybe he knows best.

Personally, I'm really enjoying the patronizing attitude from Palace mugs, implying they will still be in the Premier League, after we lose everything.
I'm still waiting for a more convincing argument from them, but it always boils down to "In our shadow for the last 30 years" , " ah yeah, but.... Southampton!" or " Well look at Charlton"

There is every chance that RDZ gets found out next season/Europe proves too much for us/We lose the players that made us a top 6 side last season.
So Staying up will be the first target next season and every season from then on.

... and @eaglesdan and @loz two very good contributors, you wouldn't want the friendly banter to dry up anyway ;)

Palace just need a better plan .... and a new stadium ..... and a fully functioning academy .... and a strong manager, not the next guy that retires having played a few games for you .... oh, and to stop paying players £200,000 a week and get yourselves a World acclaimed data team

Grudgingly have to admit their academy is finally decent. Shiny new buildings and pitches. The catchment area for their u9-u16s includes most of London so a huge pool of potential players. Sadly half of our catchment area is in the English Channel and the rest has got a lot of countryside. Yes their academy should be producing more talent than it is but they've got the players in the pipeline now.

*edit* just saying this for fairness. There is plenty to laugh about when it comes to Palace but seems they've finally sorted their academy.

Completely agree, but my point is it's not fully functioning ... yet!

The catchment area thing is pretty irrelevant. They are competing with another 16 professional clubs with the same catchment area.

But really only competing with the other PL clubs in that area, which is obviously still stiff competition. But if a young player is asked to join Wimbledon or Millwall or Charlton or Palace they'd more than likely pick Palace. They've still got a bigger pool of potential talent to pick from than we have.

That's assuming that every club's scouts gets to see every prospect in the area.
It's still a very competitive region.

Our appeal is the pathway we offer for young talent.
Palace need to have a less risk averse manager to offer that.

Are Palace in a bit of a nowhere to go place at the moment. With owners that are just rich enough to keep them where they are, but not rich enough to throw the kind of money required to hire a really top manager, and buy the next level up of players to be able to make a difference. With a standard recruitment team, that doesnt have the depth and skill, (and database) to unearth cheaper but more talented potential, like a club just 40 odd miles south does so well.

An aging stadium that must cost a fortune to just prevent it falling down, let alone improve and build , for example, a new stand.

They are unlikley to be serious challengers for Europe anytime soon, appear not to have any long term planning, or even aspirations, and no plan to achieve them even if they did.

Whichever way you look at it, Palace remain an "also taking part" team, which will likley remain until there are major changes in the structure of the hierachy at Selhurst

It must be a bit galling for the true fans, to see their club stand still season after season, and anytime a bit of hope arrives (Vierra) the owners get cold feet after a poor run and go back to plan A.

Contrast that with similar size Brighton, and be thankful we have the owner and managerial structures we do
Twelfth FC ....nothing exciting just bland old Nigel sitting in the corner. Tedious at parties

Every club around here needs to compete with the monster which is the Chelsea soccer schools network.
The number of times people tell me their kid plays for Chelsea Academy and they actually mean they do one of the Chelsea Foundation coaching schools.

Charlton, Swansea, Southampton all relevant examples of how football can be volatile, all related to ownership issues or changes.

Brighton have been streets ahead of Palace for a good few years now..Palace have lucked out massively, got away with things for many years. If there's a fanbase that should be looking over their shoulders worryingly it is Palace. Ten PL years of revenue spunked away on high wages and bad transfers. What a waste

Jeeez, when palace were in the ascendency we couldn't post 'what do you like on toast' without it being trashed by 'yeah but we finished 12th in the Premier League aren't we so superior to you'.

Now, for just the second season, in what feels like a lifetime of hard yards graft, 90% of the northern trolls are too scared to post while those that remain would like us to justify our success and use that to validate forthcoming seasons - flip off.

We had a phenomenal season, one of which we could only dream.
Next season we will have a phenomenal season, one of which you can only dream.

What happens after that, who knows, who cares, but we'll always have 2022/23 whereas you probably now can't even differentiate between seasons, over the last decade.

As a supporter I will never take anything for granted and look to secure safety first, albeit with a hope for 3 points every game (and recently a slightly raised expectation). I don't think you'll see any of us talk about the club as being 'established' in the EPL.

We only say how far we have left you behind to get a rise out of you. It seems to work

Could be a good thing to have a smaller local club for us to cherry pick the best talent from in the long run though…
