To be fair to BG, I spoke to my Dad a while back about footballing rivalries and - anecdotally at least - he said Pompey had the worst (travelling) fans, worse even than Palace and Millwall. I guess it depends on individual experiences.

Chelsea, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Leeds, ManU, etc, in the 70's would have had 'worse' fans, that's true. Palace never any kind of national reputation whatsoever.

But in terms of Brighton's rivals on the field, plus general unpleasant vibe in and around games, by 1975 Palace became the no.1. Playing in the same divisions and both clubs on the up, gives the background. Before Mullery.

My dad would take me to both the Goldstone and Fratton park in the early 70's depending on who was at home . . The violence at Pompey though was why we stopped going around '75ish and stuck to the Albion from there on . In those days Fratton park had dry moats between the Fratton and Milton end stands and pitch long before other grounds had enclosed fencing .
The fans were complete psychos and the walk from the rail station to the ground could be simply terrifying . Final straw for my dad was a QPR fixture when fighting broke out on the train home when the pompey fans realized that some of the QPR players were on the same train and we had to disembark to avoid the carnage .

Didn't Palace host a beamback when they played here in the league, with the agreement that we'd be allowed one? Or am I misremembering?

Why does it matter if Palace sell out? The beam back would only be for us. Or am I missing an obvious point?

Those saying that Palace would agree to a beamback because they may want to do the same in future are forgetting the utter SHAMBLES that occurred the last time they tried it.

spence There was a thread about it with quality photos etc. Charged a tenner to watch the cup final on a beamback. Didn't put any screens up so the gimps were left to try to watch it on the normal little screen at the other end of the pitch. Nobody could see anything so they all ended up in the shitty concourse watching Pardew's dance and Lingard's winner while crowded round a TV.

They also screwed up the beamback for the game at our place....
