Gritt23, I think Benitez considers his side 'done' now. I think he thinks this is THE team to win the league, therefore he is genuinely not interested in Michael Owen. Out of Cisse, Crouch and Morientes, only one of these three, in Morientes, is really proven to score 20 plus goals per season in the top division, whereas Owen has a phenomenal scoring record.. Le Tallec is a donkey and Liverpool will happily offload him. So why on earth won't he sign Owen to make up the fourth striker?!

Owen needs regular first team football to make sure he gets into the England squad for the world cup. I can't see him getting this at Liverpool as he is just one of several decent strikers - the same situation he is trying to get away from at Madrid. His best move probably is Newcastle as he will get more games, but lack of champions league football could be a factor.

You could argue that the lack of Champions League football is a bonus, as it will keep him fresh for next summer.

Michael Owen is a class act and will score goals wherever he goes. The problem for Newcastle could be that one of their better midfield players (Jenas) might have to go in order to finance Owen's purchase.

The Guardian report.....

Newcastle have agreed a club record transfer fee with Real Madrid for England striker Michael Owen.

The club's current record fee stands at the £15m paid for Alan Shearer in 1996, meaning the Spaniards could negotiate a tidy profit on the £10m they paid Liverpool for Owen last summer.

"Newcastle United have met Real Madrid's asking price and conditions," read a Newcastle statement. "The agreed fee will be a record transfer fee for Newcastle United. It is now up to the player and his advisor."

Real Madrid director of communications Antonio Garcia Ferreras confirmed his club had agreed a fee with Newcastle for Owen and also reported there was still no offer from Liverpool for their former player.
"This morning Real Madrid and Newcastle United have reached the principles of an agreement on the conditions of Michael Owen's transfer to the English club," he said. "There is still no agreement between Michael Owen and Newcastle. At the moment we have not received any offer from Liverpool."

Owen had already signalled that if a return to Liverpool, his preferred option, failed to materialise, he was only willing to spend a season on loan at St James' Park.

He said: "I said that my ideal situation was to start the season in the Real Madrid team and if not I would prefer to return to Liverpool. The president understood and said he would try to help me achieve this.

"If the transfer cannot be finalised in time I have agreed to go to Newcastle United but only on a one-year loan. I need to be playing regularly in World Cup year."

This could be a very good move for both Owen and Newcastle. Palying up front with Shearer again with bring loads of goals for Micky this season which can only be good for England. His sharpness will return and hopefully he can carry some good form into the World Cup.

Newcastle could quite easily make the 4th Champions League place if Souness can get his midfield firing.

4th??? with there defence?

That's what I don't understand, how can he think that forward line is done? I rate Benitez as a much better manager than that.

Isn't Le Tallec out on a season long loan somewhere else in the Premiership. If he rates him it's not for this season.

Owen makes perfect sense, I just don't understand it.

I'd imagine Spurs would be a better bet than Newcastle. They have a decent manager, and a bunch of excellent young players.

Spurs seem to be on the up at last, whereas Newcastle are stuck in the same sinking mire that they've been in for years.

Still think Liverpool will sneak in. Benitez just doesn't want to appear too keen, after all, it was Owen who decided to walk out on him. Liverpool have signed too many average players this summer- Crouch, Boudewijn Zenden!!- and they need something to lift them.

Hope they don't though, would rather see Owen stay at Madrid than be royally screwed by Souness.
