Yes, you use one, and you go to places where the other people there use them too. An echo chamber, basically. Hopefully, as the restrictions ease, the rest of us will find our own echo chambers too. It's a shame that Covid seems to have introduced another sector of society for people to look down on, i.e. people without smart phones.

Hardly an echo chamber when it's the norm. Most people have a smart phone and use them. That's the point I'm making: it's not a niche or "hipster" thing. It is an everyday thing. Though I do agree it shouldn't be the only option as relying on something complicated to do something simple is always a bad idea.

I don’t think anybody is looking down on people who don’t have smart phones. It’s just that smart phone technology is the future so companies will invest in it. It is difficult and expensive for them to subsequently make exceptions.

The word 'dinosaur' doesn't imply a degree of contempt these days?

I’ve seen some people on here rather proudly label themselves that way. I’m not one to embrace every new fad for the sake of it. However at the moment we are seeing some very rapid changes that have tangible benefits, particularly electric cars and smart technology. Rapid change can be difficult but I am open to the advantages to me as a consumer and to business and society. It’s fine for you to be reluctant.

Some people will love it, some not, what will happen is a bit more choice.

It’s a bit like Nando’s and the whole order at the till experience that some people seemed to love even before lockdown. Then the pubs that would have the flashing buzzing thing on your table to go and get your food.

Treat it as a leveller, that the places maintaining traditional service will be filled with people that appreciate it. Give the other options a wide berth, or embrace it if that’s your thing and ordering from your phone without trying to get a waiters attention who has left you sat for 15mins and doesn’t seem to recognise you exist….

Ah, the days of the dustbinmen going round the back of the house weekly, picking up a tin bin full of sticking rubbish, hoisting it up on their shoulders, carrying to the lorry and tipping it out, replacing the lid and taking it back from whence it came. A doff of the cap and you’d be happy to give them a Christmas box.
Today you have to put your bin our on the kerb fortnightly, handle facing outwards, and hope like hell they’ll turn up and empty it.

Exactly.................places will choose their business model, and customers will choose where they go. There is no doubt in my mind though that 'order by app' from your table is here to stay, and will be far more common post-Covid though with places that didn't previously have it now using it. I don't mind it, but it can be a right faff when the 'options' pop up - having ordered 5 'meal deals' at Pizza Hut this week that included salads (dressing, no dressing, if Y type of dressing, coleslaw Y/N, potato salad Y/N, bacon bits Y/N), then pizzas (size, toppings, bases, stuffed crust), ice creams (sauces, toppings, flavours), drinks etc etc - and then needing to pay online when ordering........it took me AGES :lolol::lolol:

Junior would 100% prefer ordering from an App................it is partly a generational thing.

Been using the Spoons and Greene King apps for a while now, and have become rather adept at it. Once there's a quarter of a pint left in my glass, a little tippity-tap on the app and hey presto - your next beer is already there on the table all ready and waiting. Getting up, going to the bar and waiting to be served ? OK grandad.

In pre-covid days I can recall when we went to Wembley for the FA Cup semi. Pre-match we battled our way into a Spoons which was absolutely RAMMED, they were queuing about 6-deep at the bar. We were lucky enough to grab a table just as a party was leaving, and they were advertising this ordering app. A couple of mates went off to queue at the bar, whilst I thought I'd give the app a go. Downloaded it, browsed and ordered some drinks for us at the table, and they duley arrived via a waitress within a few minutes. Meanwhile, the ones who went to the bar got back with their drinks about 15-20 minutes later.

I've been sold on the smartphone route ever since.

No reception staff, no bellboys, no room service - about the only people you see are the cleaning staff. I think the lack of human contact is pretty sad and makes the place rather sterile, besides who are you supposed to complain to if the couple next door are having a noisy shag

When I'm in a pub I like to walk up to the bar, chat to the staff, exchange pleasantries. In restaurants I like to get the waiter's opinion, have a chat with the sommelier, have a drink with the manager or chef in places I know well. I like to see and chat to people.
The app system is very convenient for the Covid era. Well, essential really, so I get it. I rarely drink in 'spoons and it's not the place to make friends with the staff so I'd be happy to use the app.
But if all future pub or restaurant experiences were conducted through an app, devoid of meaningful contact with the people who work there, I think it would be a great shame and I would soon grow weary of it all.

I've not been out yet and encountered this but I can see the drawbacks though. How easy is it to order if you are unfortunate to have dietary problems for instance?

A pal has an egg allergy and is mostly veggie too so has to ask if any food in batter can be made without the egg. Interactions that take seconds with a waiter will be incredibly difficult without one. ..

It felt like once I'd placed my order I should go out into the kitchen and cook it myself.
Two mentions. Pub in Brighton where I sat in the garden desperate for a cold shandy. Now nothing beats that thirst quenching gulp as you stand at the bar waiting for your change. Nope, sat at a table and lost my thirst by the time it arrived.
Heads up to the Juggs in Kingston, Lewes. Met on arrival, checked in etc and given cleaned menu at table. Few minutes later girl took order and as the meal progressed we were checked upon. Even paid cash.
