I know a Mr Baker who is in fact a butcher. I also genuinely knew a guy called Mike Hunt. I think both his parents must have had a very sheltered upbringing.

This is a bit of an aside but never mind: Those of you who listen to 'Thought for the Day' on Radio 4 (I'm sure you all do) will probably be familiar with Rabbi Lionel Blue. His family were immigrants to Britain and his father looked around for a nice, unobtrusive English surname they could adopt which wouldn't draw attention to them. He worked out that colors were pretty popular; Black, Green, Brown and White were all common surnames so he guessed 'Blue' must be as well.

Loads of pop-stars change their names, but I can understand Harry Webb (Cliff Qweerchard) doing it, but why Engelbert Humperdink?

That wasn't the idea of old Larry Parnes was it? ('Parnes shiilings and pence') He had a stable of singers in the 60s and made them all change their names.

I knew an old lady that lived in a shoe. Well, it was more of a warden controlled flat but it smelt like an old shoe.
