Additionally, what kind of signings would you realistically expect from a lower mid-table side lacking in real financial punching power like Palace? They and similar teams will get the odd gem (see Cabaye, Bojan, Sigurdsson etc) but the majority of the time it's a selection of aging stars not quite cut out for the very top or some cut price talent from abroad.
