Ironic that Brexiteers cited a main reason for leaving the EU being it is undemocratic, yet here in the UK Theresa May is likely to be crowned Tory leader with out the Tory rank and file getting to vote on it, then she's likely to become PM without a General Election to endorse her.

Meanwhile Corbyn is being forced into a leadership contest without any mandate for that contest from the ordinary Labour members that elected him.

Political hypocrisy of the highest order. The EU must be shaking their heads in disbelief, a complete uber-omnishambles.

Ad to that May isn't a Brexiter and frankly you couldn't make it up. The consolation for many Leave voters is they will get screwed less now, than the right wing loons they voted for

Ah, so what Farage has essentially done is preach for 4 years that UKIP is a viable political party and that they have more to say and do than just leaving the EU. Then when we leave the EU he realises that actually his party was always a two bit, low rent shambles and chips off, all his posturing that they could lead people into a shining new era was bravado and bluff and when the hard work of actually leading his party into power in the new Britain ,he professed his party would be a key part of , actually comes to fruition he simply says his job is done, even though he claimed they would be a huge part of it all. Work-shy fantasist who is not prepared to follow through what he promised and what he, in part, created. How anyone can respect the man is mind boggling.

Would you like any more sour grapes or do you have enough already?

What makes today's Tory leadership events worse is that Theresa May's speech in Birmingham was supposed to kick off her leadership campaign. Consequently, she's drafted a speech to appeal to those of the 150,000 Tory members who voted LEAVE she thought would be voting in 9 weeks time.

She's therefore gone on record as saying "Brexit means Brexit" and confirming there is no chance of going back on the referendum outcome. Had Leadsom withdrawn before this speech May would have been left some wriggle room in case she faced the real possibility of a legal challenge and having to vote on Brexit in Parliament - in that case she could have said Parliament is sovereign and I will execute the will of Parliament.

However, on the day she has effectively become leader, she's nailed her colours firmly to the mast. She's going to look pretty stupid if the issue does go to a Parliamentary vote and a majority of the MPs do vote against Brexit, particularly as she herself voted to REMAIN.

This is absolutely true, however, it seems slightly off to me that the Tory party didn't even want to canvas their own party members on who the next leader was, just in case the wrong name came out top. Why bother with this election sham ratified by the 1922 committee if they had already decided it was May, anyway, the daily mail (Dacre) had made that decision days ago and once The Times (Murdoch) joined suit it was a foregone conclusion. Still, it's nice to see the wheels of democracy working for the people.

They fully intended to canvas their members but there is only 1 contender still standing. What are they going to ask them?

Labour have called for a General Election. It's an open goal for Theresa May; she'd be bloody mad to say no - then worries about her being unelected will disappear.

Also, Corbyn will have no chance to resign after getting humiliated - the only issue being how small a party there would be for the new leader to take over...

Corbin has won four by elections,3 of them with an increased vote share, maybe not as cut and dried as some may think

she has over played the brexit means brexit angle, which i thought was daft over the weekend/this morning. however she doesn't really have a choice if there is a motion to put it to parliament. those making a legal challenge that an Act of Parliament must pass to invoke Article 50, as the referendum was non-binding and had no provisions for what to do with the result, will not be put off by her position in hustings.

Winning by elections in mid-term is no barometer. If there was an election tomorrow Labour would be mauled and the cons would basically be left to run riot.

Even in Stalin's Soviet Union the people got a choice of putting their 'X' in the one box on the ballot paper headed "J Stalin - voter here >".

It seems like the 150,000 Tory members won't even get that opportunity.

Which is why Leadsom resigned now, before the BBC and rest of the media could give her even more of a kicking. Now she knows Teresa can't retract.

Asw someone pointed out other referendum votes have gone closer than 52:48 and been treated as binding. I voted for "Remain" but we have now made our bed..sadly our kids won't be eligible for 5-yeart work permits in Germany as I was able to get in the 1980's.

What about all those MP's and Lords who clock in and then walk straight back out 10 mins later? Now that is totally taking the piss.

At least they turn up to claim their ex's
MEP's don't even have to do that but can still claim fixed costs that simply don't exist in Farage's case. That and his two pensions and he's made for life

I can't see any result other than Labour going backwards. The latest polls have Labour 8% behind the Tories, vs 6.5% behind in the actual results in the last General Election. Yes, the polls were way off then....... they overstated Labour's vote share.

Also the Tories will play the National Security card (i.e. Corbyn being anti-Trident) in the same way they played the "Labour/SNP are a thread" card last year and I'm pretty sure it will work.

Delighted that Theresa May will be our next Prime Minister.

An intelligent, dignified, honest and likeable person. She'll do her very best for our country. Andrea Leadsom's comments were cutting and cruel. Theresa has given her whole life to politics without maternity gaps and as home secretary has done a magnificent job.

May's already f*cked up big time. What she should have said is that if she is obliged to execute Brexit she will do so.

This is very different to what she's already said because it means LEAVE without a Parliamentary vote AND it leaves the door open to execute Brexit after a Parliamentary vote to LEAVE. There exists the possibility that Parliament will vote to REMAIN and, given that Parliament is sovereign, she would have to stand by their decision.

She would be a fool to become Tory leader without an endorsement from the Tory members, then become PM without a general election and then invoke Article 50 without putting it to a Parliamentary vote. Yet the way she's talking it's likely that all of these things will come to pass. This is a dark, dark day for British democracy.

As when Gordon Brown became PM.

.....and Cameron and the Tory party raised merry hell at it :lolol:
Didn't change the rules though - just grabbed the first opportunity to do the same.

None of them are any better than the others.

It will be a dark, dark day for democracy everywhere if a small bunch of politicians overturn the will of the people, democratically voted in a referendum.

I'd like to know whether Leadsom deliberately timed her withdrawal until after May had given that speech announcing "Brexit means Brexit". If so it was a masterstroke from the LEAVE campaign.
