Our builder (Liverpool supporter) asked me who the Albion's first £1mill signing was.

To my shame, I didn't know but felt like I should. Anyone know this?

Although I wouldn't be completely shocked if someone comes and corrects me. But I think he was a mill', and we hadn't signed anyone that much before him.

Maybank arrived a few months later for £175k
Gordon Smith and Michael Robinson were both £400k I believe
The Wardy/Ritchie/Birtles thing was a bit convoluted as values were attached to players rather than cash changing hands.
We must have had one of longest lived records for transfer fee paid, that;s for sure.

I thought we paid the big money for Gary Williams and Lawrenson was a make weight, either way it worked out well.
