So the football club would no longer be named “Brighton and Hove Albion”?

Brighton
I was thinking about this last week because of the way your team name always gets shortened to Brighton in the media. If I supported the Albion, it would massively irritate me.

I still don't really think of B&H as a 'city' and it most definitely retains the feeling and ambience of two places with their distinct characters. Whatever next? There'll be a petition to paint the seafront railings the same colour! It's a no from me.

Hello everyone. Gutted about the result today, but we’ll bounce back stronger as always.

I want to share something that I’ve been thinking about for a long time, and it’s now live as a petition.
Recently, I shared the idea with the City Council, and they suggested starting a petition to gauge public interest.

Here’s the petition link if you’d like to sign

My idea is to simplify the city’s name from Brighton & Hove to just Brighton. Importantly, this wouldn’t erase Hove’s identity—it would still be recognized as a distinct and proud part of Brighton, much like areas like Chelsea are in London. This change is about creating a unified and stronger identity for the city as a whole.

The petition needs 1,250 signatures to move forward, so every voice counts.

As a lifelong Brighton fan, season ticket holder, and someone who deeply cares about our city, I’ve also emailed Paul Barber to make sure the club would be okay with this idea. If the club were against it, I wouldn’t go any further with it.

Right now, I’m just trying to gauge interest and see what the wider community thinks. Personally, I believe the City of Brighton sounds more streamlined and powerful while still preserving Hove’s unique identity as part of something bigger.

Once again, here’s the link to the petition if you’d like to share your views.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, whether you agree or not.
I apologise for the abusive answers you've received. The worst thing about NSC is how we treat newcomers, especially those who have the audacity to immediately start threads that go against popular opinion. It does bring out the worst of our inbred yokel tendencies: ("Arrrr! 'Eee be Palace!")

However whilst I might argue with the tone of some of the responses I certainly agree with the sentiment. No, I think it's a terrible idea, I think it's even worse than when Whitehawk FC wanted to rebrand themselves as 'Brighton City'. We are Brighton AND Hove, both the city and the football team. The two are inextricably linked, have been for decades, and I hope they always remain that way. I hope your idea never gets further than a bit of internet talk. Rebranding us won't make one iota of difference either to our national or international profiles. Utter waste of time and money.

Astonishingly, I think this is the stupidest thing I've read so far today.
Same here. Although it's only 08.52 and I haven't logged in at work yet.

I'm sure they'll be plenty of signatures west of Landsdowne Place.

I think you are on a wind up. In which case, fair play. If you can get it in the Argus, that's where you'll have the most fun.

I'm not sure that many of us do actually see it as a city. And you're right, Brighton and Hove do have separate identities. I've always said, Brighton was made for Saturday night, Hove for Sunday morning.

But if I do venture into town any stage, well I've just used the phrase there inadvertently. It's not a city and it never will be.

Not in Whitechapel
I think that's the *best idea for a campaign since the campaign to install a memorial bench for rapper Eazy-E in Newhaven.

* And by best I mean the worst

Yeh I like the bench thing though. I used to have to go to Newhaven for work occasionally and would always pop by the memorial bench

Changing the city's name? No

In true West v East fashion, there was also the Tupac bench in Lancing.

“It’s brought people together, like the hip-hop community and the people who like benches. Though some have said the link is tenuous, Pac’s killer was never found, so he or she could easily have been from Lancing.”
