Should? We "should" have also signed a forward by this stage.

I enjoy a cheeky bargain or seeing young players coming through the development squad as much as anyone but if the club are serious about finishing in the top 10 our transfer budget will need to reflect that. It hasn't in this window.

Coventry have spent more than us. I'm aware we've still got a month to go but at this stage it would be great to keep up with pack.

Have Coventry spent more than 'us' over the last 3, 4 & 5 windows as it's compiled a seriously impressive, (short a striker) Premier League squad?

Villa agreeing to pay £28m (rising to £33m) for Watkins seems a lot. Has the world gone mad? Makes the £15m for Locadia seem a bargain!

Given that they've completed within 48 hours of losing out on Wilson I'd say they've panicked and ended up paying over the odds.

Yes, he is a good player but would I be happy if the Albion had paid £28m rising to £33m for him? No way, that would be totally financially irresponsible unless we'd sold a player of equivalent value.

When will Villa learn that regularly paying over the odds for players doesn't work?

£10m+ more than Maupay.

To clarify the reference was to this transfer window. But you know that. It's also irrelevant that I chose Coventry other than it's factual (for this window).

The point I was making was our expenditure is below that of all of our competition in this window.

I'd say previous windows have thrown up some mixed results but overall agree we now have an impressive squad of players which has continued to grow with some shrewd deals. However should we fulfil TB's top 10 aspirations we will need to spend some money!

£10m+ more than Maupay.

Plus Watkins is older, scored the same number of goals as Maupay but in a much more dominant side last year and from what I've seen, doesn't work as hard or hold onto the ball as well.

So much for Covid discounts.

Excuse the slight diversion from the PL but Man City women are really going for it - having already signed Mewis and Lavelle, they've just picked up Lucy Bronze.

The gap between the top of the women's league and the rest is bigger than the gap in the PL

Accept that, however we have moved players on so the money should at least be there to pay the wages of any inbound players coupled along with the fact we've only spent £900k this window and clubs around us are clearly making statements of intent. I trust the club entirely and would rather sign nobody than the wrong person. However, we have one of the thinnest squads in the league now and if we want to progress there are a few areas that need improving. Not expecting us to blow £50m on players like Newcastle, Leeds, Villa just a couple of decent investments in the right area as we have done so far.

Really pisses me off when people assume that because we want our team to do better than they are currently that we're ungrateful for what we already have. This is not the case surely everybody wants to see progression regardless of how much it is?

Fair enough, so we are both really pissed off but for different reasons :lolol:

Totally with you on that one. I like him as a player (watched a lot of Championship football last season) but up to £33m for a 'promising' player seems ridiculous to me at our level (meaning bottom half of the Prem).

There doesn't appear to me to be many (if any) UK based players left to target (Brewster or Wood possibly) that we could afford, so wouldn't be surprised now if either any new striker comes in from abroad (who is a surprise to most of us - like the club pulled with the Veltman deal) or we just go with what we've got and promote Gyokeres and Tolaj upwards, or use Trossard as an emergency center forward if needed.

Ridiculous amount of money for Watkins. Desperation.

Still surprised no PL side went for Ivan Toney at 9 million. Brentford are the lower PL teams middle men.

Early window we looked way ahead of rivals, we're now starting to look worse as they strengthen key positions Inc the most key of all CF.

Just hope for positive news soon. Newcastle, Villa, Palace all getting decent CF options.

The striker we sign will most likely either be Brewster on loan or Karlan Grant on a permanent for around £15m or something entirely out the blue from the French or Belgian league. Think there's a good chance on Gonzalez as a versatile forward option and hopefully we can get a lwb over the line.

Expect Andone, Bernardo, Jahanbaksh all to leave. No sources just educated guesses. Palace signing Batshuayi and Eze even if they lose Zaha they'll be absolutely fine again. Villa really going for it. Newcastle really going for it. West Ham bit of a shambles, Burnley standing still, promoted sides and Sheff Utd all strengthening up. Everton taking the piss with there financial power. Saints, Wolves and Leicester in a position to leave us all behind a long with Everton.

Gonna be another extremely tough season. Getting less and less confident watching rivals make decent transfers. However, still think we've got more than enough to match last years performance.

Leeds seemingly going for the machine gun tactic. No need to see whether they'd be willing to play for them (obviously there is no step down from PSG to Leeds).

Well lets not get too carried away.
Newcastle have Gayle (injured), Carroll (benchwarmer) , JoLinton (40m failure) and now Callum Wilson (ageing/expensive - 8 goals last season)
Palace have Benteke (1 goal a season), Wickham (1 goal a season) and now likely Batshuayi (we'll see). They also impressively loaned out Sorloth who couldn't score for toffee but then started scoring as soon as left SE20 and is now worth £m apparently.
Villa have an untested £30m Champ striker, jurys out Wesley and jurys out Samatta - that they've spent £60m on !!

Until a short while ago none of the teams outside of the top six had bought a striker, so it's no surprise to see signings being made, and if Nunez had come off we'd be looking good to challenge for a top half finish.

What we do have is money and three seasons of Prem football in the bank, so are in a good negotiating place, and all the while there are affordable and quality strikers out there like Jhon Cordoba, Maxi Gomez.

With Dan Ashworth and his FA connections there's a chance we'll land Rhian Brewster too.

Poor old PSG. They have no idea what will hit them if they dare to say no.

My guess is that we are keeping our powder dry publicly as usual and awaiting the top six settling their squads so we can loan or buy a bigger fish than the best of the Championship. Chelsea, for example, may well be keen to reduce their wages bill after a big transfer window. They may not be the only ones.

I believe the same thing (or similar). Plenty of clubs, perhaps not in England but everywhere else, needs to sell players to survive this covid thing, basically. At this point they are still hoping to get "normal" fees for their players, but as October 5th gets closer, they will be desperate to sell. I think one or two new players are more likely to come near the end of the transfer window rather than now.
