Other Teams Excuses

It seems funny to me that all of our games against the so called "better" teams in this league + B'muff have ended up in their fans saying that they just had a bad day at the office. My charlton mate refused to believe we simply played them off the park and simply said they just played rubbish, on the posh podcast although they said we played nice, slick football they still said that they just played awful. And my B'muff friend said that they played rubbish and they are usually better than that.
Maybe it's me but it seems strange that all of these teams had an off day aginast us. Is it possible we are just playing so well and having so much of the ball we are just making them look like a sunday pub team? :bhasign:

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Teams will play badly, generally, if they come up against a side that doesn't let them in the game. It is up to them to compete or the opposing manager to change things about.

I really don't mind, it's just funny. Looking forward to someone saying we fluked automatic promotion.

It's called Denial and it's the most common thing in sport. If you have another match/competition/race in a few days and you've just been beaten heavily you can't dwell on that and think 'We were nowhere near them, we might as well pack it in'. Instead you say 'we had some bad luck and would have been there' or 'we were off form'. That way you can get up for the next one and believe you can do it. Joe Lewis said it like it was after the game but I bet he was 'put right' by the manager or teammates when he got back in the changing room.

Getting a bit carried away, maybe, but are we turning into the equivalent of the 'Magical Magyars', who turned England inside out in 1953?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jonathanstevenson/2010/08/when_the_magical_magyars_illum.html

Here are some extracts from Kenneth Wolstenholme's commentary, copied from England Football Online | The True Story of the National Football Team . I'm sure I've also heard footage of him effectively complaining that the no. 9 played in a withdrawn position, and wasn't therefore allowing England's centre half to mark him:

After Hidegkuti had shot Hungary in front in the first minute...

Well, everybody has always said, these continentals can't shoot, but if that's a sample of what we're going to have this afternoon, then England are going to be in dire trouble. 1-0 after 45 seconds, then, for Hungary.

After Puskas had left England captain, Billy Wright, on the seat of his pants, before firing Hungary's third.

...and that was Puskas, the inside left and captain, who scored that one, and my goodness, if he can turn on tricks like this, we ought to have him on the music hall! I've never seen such tremendous ball control as that exhibition of that back-heel and the quick shot. 3-1, then, for Hungary.

After Puskas had scored again...

Well, before the game, everybody was telling me that it was a lot of ballyhoo about these Hungarians, England would win. Well, here we are, 27 minutes gone, 4-1 down.

With the score at 5-2...

They seem to play football as the Harlem Globetrotters play basketball, this Hungarian side.

How many of our losses in the last few years have had nothing to do with our poor play and been the result of bad referees?

Every fan base looks to blame other things before being negative about their own players (though there are obvious exceptions to the rule within the fan base).

You don't remember our defence from 12 months or so ago...?

Its the beauty of not being neutral. Everyones out to get you and yoru hard done by or lose by fluke.

But its just us, other teams are just being twats and actually referee's just hate us. Irrational but its what you do as a fan (with the said exceptions).

Hindsight.

HOw many blamed bad decisions, unlucky streaks and "good performances but we just can't finish games off" at the time? I know I did.

I know what you mean, and I think to an extent most fans look for excuses in one form or another. However I'd like to think that I can appreciate when we are out-played or when we don't deserve to win. Look at the Peterborough fans on Saturday, they believe we deserved to win but many of them are still saying "Bennett dived for the penalties" or "Barnes should have been sent off with Boyd" or "Calderon was a cheat". It's just how it goes.

This is the best quote about any team anywhere I have ever read

"As it was Posh only threatened when Brighton became bored by their own ball-hogging and gave possession away."
