OT - New hard-drive and now the USB ports aren't working?

Mrs Coach

aka Jesus H. Woman
Perhaps one of you has come across this problem? My laptop hard-drive had to be replaced, it's had all it's programmes re-installed, the drivers show it being up to date, but it's not recognising that anything is being plugged into the usb ports?
Not very handy when I'm trying to upload the players interviews from today!
The computer itself is showing the usb ports and drivers, but when you plug something in (a recorder, ipod, webcam) its not recognising anything is in there. It didn't have this problem before the new hard drive was installed, and nothing else seems to be wrong with it!

Any help would be greatly appreciated as the interviews are for the show Saturday!

Worthing
Have you tried all the USB ports in the machine?

In device manager does it list 'USB root hubs' ?

Its entirely possible the service engineer knocked the small ribbon cable out when replacing the hard drive OR something has shorted out the USB port.

I'd take it back to where you got it fixed and get them to sort it.

On desktop right click on my computer select properties then select device manager. under universal serial bus controllers right click on all devices one by one then click uninstall, once you have done that reeboot.
windows should then refind them all and install drivers for them.
