What got me concerned, was that about 9 months ago we looked at some fairly new houses about 40 meters off Seaford seafront. On most houses in the development the wind and rain had eaten away the mortar between the bricks up to about an inch deep. In some places it was so bad you could put your fingers into the cavity.
Not good.
Oh yes, the "pointing" issue, a contractors dream area for this work, a friend of mine had a house 2 miles in from Seaford beach and had to have the chimney repointed twice in 10 years. I had a flat about 100 yards from the beach, which faced directly SW and had no issues with the pointing, but I did have to replace the original windows with new plastic ones which solved a lot of the rot issues, always something you can barter with during the purchase.
The main issue, as mentioned above, is the abuse on the car. I had a car port and my cars were always getting rust quicker than my parents house at the back of town.
