OT - Antivirus software

I have been using Avast free software for years and its been great. Just recently I have been getting advertising sites opening on their own, even when the PC has been idle for an hour or so.

I suspect some Spyware or Adware software has invaded my PC. Can someone recommend some free software to deal with this, that will work happily alongside Avast.

Been using AVG free for 3 years now, so far so good (don't want to tempt fate)

Edit: Whoops should read the post properly, that is not a solution to your problem!

Have used Avast and AVG on different boxes, both do all I need. However my main machine (this one) uses Kaspersky as recommended by PC Pro.

Avira AntiVir works for me - it picked up a couple of nasty trojans missed by AVG.

I use Ad-Aware and Spybot running alongside Avast! Used with Firefox with AdBlock Plus I never get any ads opening. And Windows Defender is in there too.

All free too.

I've used Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in the past and that has served me well.

Thanks guys. I am now running Ad-Aware and Spybot alongside Avast.

So far I have found and removed over 80 offending items that Avast did not 'see'.

A friend of mine who works for ITS or ITF what ever it is, told me to use this SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware!

He said its what they use there so it must be decent, found something that AVG or Norton didn't find
