Ubuntu is not that hard. Everything can easily be installed through the software centre or via the terminal, it is up to you. As with all new operating system you need to get used to how they work. After x amount of years using Windows, anything else will feel a bit alien, but the more you use Ubuntu or OSX the more you will grow to like it and in some cases never want to go back to Windows again.

Remember in Ubuntu you can always install Virtualbox and run Windows in a Virtual machine.
I don't know what they have on Mac, but again you can install Windows in it.

What did my head in was that I couldn't use spotify or FM12 (god I'm tragic) Everything else that I could make work was fast

You could try and run Spotify in Wine
Spotify in Wine - Spotify - Spotify

Nothing tragic about that. Ubuntu does not have the same amount of games as Windows or Mac but it is getting a lot better. Native steam client is being released so hopefully some decent games are heading Ubuntu way.

It was integrated in Safari, I put all my podcast rss feeds in a folder on the bookmarks bar and when a new edition of for instance The Albion Roar came out it showed on the bookmarks bar and just had to scroll down and download, very handy. I've now found a stand alone rss reader but that is an extra app that I didn't need before.

Does Firefox have an RSS reader? I use FF in preference to Safari, though not looked into RSS

This is my test of using dictation. I don't know if it works okay because it doesn't show the text via finished talking. Anyway this is what I said.

So can I make the leap from Snow Leopard to this newfangled tomfoolery? I'm rocking a vintage '08 Intel iMac with STICKERS ON IT.

Just what I was wondering. I've got 2007 Macbook Core 2 Duo on Snow Leopard. Had resisted going to Lion, but might give Mountain Lion a go if the machine can handle it.

I just flogged one of them to get a newer model and find Mountain Lion to be slow.

If I were you I'd wait until some of the performance issues have been ironed out if you really want to upgrade.

Cheers for the heads up

I've had to totally reboot my Macbook several times due to crippling slow down

Isn't it recommended that you 'get rid' of the previous OS before installing the new one? I haven't been tempted to change mine but I did a bit of reading up on it in case I fancied downloading Lion.
