You can still support Brighton without mentioning something that happened before our "yoof" were born every five mins.

A lot of the fans that went to Villa on my train last week wouldn't be able to find Gillingham on a map.

In 1979 we went up to the top division and used to get 30k crowds as well. Earlier that decade we were getting MAHOOSIVE crowds in Divisions Two and Three, taking massive Derby to a replay in the League Cup and attracting Brian Clough as a manager.

Which bit of our history should we stop at? Or should we accept we've been both slightly massive and massively slight?

I went for a beer with an old uni pal of mine 20 years ago. His family are from East Africa. We were chatting about ancestry and I mentioned I could't trace mine back past the early 20th century. I asked him how far he could trace his back.

"To Lucy" he said.

If you've got it (history), flaunt it

"Football at this level is an exceptionally intricate game in which the world’s best coaches plot out their strategies in stunning detail, compute its thousands of moving parts, make contingencies upon contingencies. It feels hopelessly simplistic to boil down the issues with Graham Potter’s complex and delicately balanced Brighton team to “just sign a striker”. But, you know. Sometimes you really do just have to sign a striker."

Not a Guardian fan at all, but spot on with this. My sentiments completely.

Indeed.

So that would include a Cup Final, a Charity Shield and 36,000 people packed into the Goldstone for a lower league game, as well as York, Hereford, Darlington, Fans United and that time we took 50 people to Plymouth Argyle wouldn't it? Indeed, didn't PAFC get involved because we were a "proper football club" in trouble?

Absolutely spot on. And not the first to point this out. This has been going on for years now. Club leaders take note or expect more boos and discontent

Good report, as usual.

After the packed Goldstone years in the mid late 70's, didn't crowds drop away in the early 80's. despite being top flight. At the end of the day a lot of people go to be entertained. Even more so nowadays, it's a very corporate affair.

Like I said on another thread yesterday, the whole footballing world can see it. Including Tony Bloom. ESPECIALLY Tony Bloom. If he's not willing to pay the going rate for an EPL-ready striker, it's either because he can't or he won't. If it's the latter, it's going to bite him in the bum bigtime, and sooner rather than later

I'm totally with you on this TH but what is the going rate? And what are the wages on top of a transfer fee?

I was disappointed to see Tammy Abraham go to Roma, that said I wouldn't have been comfortable with the Albion paying a player a reported £200,000 a week.

Pardon the cliche but it really is a Catch 22 situation, we do need a striker but to reiterate at what cost?

Things have never been the same since Charlie Webb retired.

This is obviously the problem. . . getting someone better than we have on our budget. . .

trouble is the forward players we have are going backwards. . . . that desperately needs addressing as well.

And I think this is the root of Potter's tetchiness. It's a bad look for a manager when all his players in the same position are getting progressively worse at a time in their careers when they should be getting better

Maupay, IMO started well and has gone backwards since arriving
Connolly got promoted, was seemingly going to get better and has subsequently gone backwards
JL was using a fake CV to get there before GP, so not his fault but we haven't either improved him or offloaded him.

Welbeck is exactly what it said on the tin. a 70's Italian sports car, occaisionally briliant, often in the repair shop.

signing anyone or promoting someone must be more of a priority than paying that lot at the moment.

that simply isn't true though is it? I'd say Maupay has perhaps not improved too much and Connolly's the only real one who's gone backwards (though that spurs game was maybe a false dawn), but Trossard and Zeqiri definitely have improved and Locadia and Andone were lost causes to begin with. Agree that some changes are needed up front but to say that they're all getting worse is inaccurate

OK, Trossard is definitely improving yes. Not a striker through. Zeqiri has hardly played for us, much less up front, so I can't agree with that.

Maupay should be a better player at 25 than he was at 22 and he isn't. Connolly should be a better player at 21 than at 18. He isn't. Those are the real questions he has to answer about improving players in these positions

no, not a striker, correct, and i said as much a few pages back. but for the purposes of looking at how the attacking players have developed, I'd consider him part of the equation simply because it's looking at how they all fit in the system.

Maupay hasn't improved, that is correct, but perhaps he's hit his ceiling. We know the kind of market we've been shopping in, and if we paid £16 million for someone who's found their ceiling at 8-10 goals a season in the prem, that's probably an okay deal. Particularly when you consider how integral he is to our build up play and how even toothlesser we looked when he came off on Saturday.

Connolly has gone backwards and it's up to the club and Potter to a) figure out why and b) address it, I would agree with that, and personally having watched the u23s a lot last season I noticed a marked improvement in zeqiri's build up and hold up play as he's gotten more used to the kind of football we want him playing.

Potter has often spoken about improving the players we have rather than spending on someone new, and I think the question needs to now be rather than launching an inquest into why player x or y hasn't improved, saying okay they haven't improved, now do we need to maybe try a different route in order to get where we want to be, I.e new investment..
