As a casual personal observation rather than it necessarily being factual, Americans in gateway cities seem to me to be much more liberal and educated than those in less populated areas. Having been to backwaters in Texas I was genuinely staggered by the racism, bigotry and general thickness of so many Texans I met. I am not a fan of Florida either, the way they treat Indians shocked and upset me. The West Coast I loved and I think I am the only person I know and have met that is not in love with New York, nothing to do with the inhabitants, I just felt a bit meh about it

In many ways, I'd say the UK was a similar in a micro way. Although we don't really have the extremities. Some of that is because of UK law mind. If folk could say what they think and act as they chose, with little comeback, we'd probably look very different.
