I was just reading about Ulloa getting the number 19 shirt when I started thinking which shirt number would have scored the most goals for Brighton since the inception of squad numbers, and then trying to put together a league table... (Because I am sad like that)

Obvious would be 25 - (Zamora, Lua Lua)
or maybe 9 (Hart, Forster, Barnes)
Or even 7 (Freeman, Knight, Bennett)
Others of note would be 12 (CMS, Chippy, Lua Lua 1st time) and 17 (yes, him)

Anyone have the data to work that out easily (step forward Acker79) or should I go crunch some numbers?

Presumably it would be a low number, on the basis that for the vast majority of the Albion's history, the starting XI played in numbers 1-11.

And on the assumption that strikers tend to wear numbers between 7 and 11, it would be one of them.

Ah- I see you only meant since the introduction of squad numbers. I stand corrected

Good question.

I'd have to go with 9.

I don't have historic records. I've only been keeping track for the last few seasons, and squad numbers only since last season.

In terms of squad numbers, I would guess number 17 is the most prolific thanks obviously to Murray, but also to Bas Savage who rolled in a few. He only wore it for a half a season though, having been number 34 during his prolific spell. Number 25 is an obvious contender because of Newhouse, Zamora, Craig Davies ( :lolol: ) and Kazenga LuaLua. Number 9 must be the winner though, Hart scored over a period of time then Forster was banging them in for a couple of years and Barnes has been top scorer for a couple of years.

In terms of least prolific, I think number 5 must take it. Number 3 is going to be pretty close, but even though Greer has only scored a couple, that's more than I can think of our number 5s scoring... Obviously Dunk hasn't, Battipiedi didn't, Simon Morgan I don't think did, nor Blackwell. Darren Carr (remember him?!) did though I think, once. El-Abd has been our number 6 since around 2003 and hasn't scored many but he has chipped in with a few down the years.

Apart from Paul Rogers, the number 8 hasn't been too prolific either down the years. Federico Turienzo would have changed that, but didn't!

I think Joel Lynch was #5 wasn't he? He scored a few (including the winner against Cheltenham, that never actually went in...)

Mayo notched a few wearing 3.

He did, but his goal at Ipswich in the Championship was when he was wearing number 34.

Did Mayo score wearing number 3? I can't think of any, admittedly that doesn't mean he didn't, but I'm struggling a bit. In fact, wasn't his last goal for us when he was wearing #19?!

Watson was PROLIFIC at number 2!

Really?! I don't remember that at all.

A slight amendment to what I wrote earlier on, Paul Brooker wore number 6 when he first joined us and scored a few before changing to number 11. Ultimately though, I think numbers 9, 17 and 25 are the most prolific. I would put 25 first, 9 second and 17 third.

Also, knowing that @RM Taylor is a squad numbers bore, I'd be interested to see if he'd agree with my deductions.
