You thought the new Inquiry would only cost you £35000 but with no publicity Lewes District Council have upped the amount they are prepared to spend - and are going to spend - to £60000.

Maybe you should once again let the local papers and councillors know what you think of them spending all this money on something that will only be of benefit to the Lewes Community.

The following is an extract from the Lewes District Council cabinet meeting of 24th November 2004.

At its meeting on 6 October 2004, the Council had agreed that a budget of £35,000 be approved for the re-opened Falmer Public Inquiry in respect of the planning application by Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club for the provision of a new community stadium at Falmer. Since that time, it had been considered necessary to employ additional transport witness advice which could not be funded from the approved budget. The Report therefore suggested that a further £21,000 be made available to fund such costs and that such additional sum be met from the General Fund Working Balance.

The Director of Planning and Environmental Services reported details of the need for additional resources in respect of the Inquiry, including the need to engage specialist transport and stadium consultants, further details of which were set out in a document that had been prepared by the District Solicitor which was circulated at the meeting and made available to the public attending the meeting (a copy of which is contained in the Minute Book).

Resolved

That a further budget of £25,000 be provided to meet the costs of the re-opened Falmer Public Inquiry in respect of the planning application by Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club for the provision of a new community stadium at Falmer;

: Alternative Options Considered and Rejected:

That, with regard to Minute 129.3 above, two alternative options were considered, namely:

(a) That a further budget of £21,000 be provided to meet the costs of the re-opened Falmer Public Inquiry in respect of the planning application by Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club for the provision of a new community stadium at Falmer; and

(b) That no further budget be provided to meet the costs of the re-opened Inquiry referred to above.

Thought re-opened enquiry was only going to decide whether any other site was better than Falmer.
Didn't think new evidence or discussion was open for Falmer, that was all in the previous part of the enquiry.

What the **** is going on here?:shootself

1. They are obviously trying to ensure that the re-opened Inquiry lasts longer than the time initially allocated - thereby guaranteeing that the Inspector's Report fails to get to Prescott in time for a decision to be announced before the General Election;

2. They are either planning to argue a case for other sites apart from their favoured site at Sheepcote Valley, or they are finding that their case for Sheepcote Valley is so unrobust that they are having to throw more money at strengthening it;

3. They are acting against the wishes of most of their Council Taxpayers, who plainly DON'T want the Council wasting money on this ill-conceived and obstructive manoeuvre;

4. They are demonstrating that they couldn't care less whether Sussex has a professional football club with the capability of progressing to the highest level.

My initial thought when reading the Colbourne Kid's first post was as outlined in (2), which, in a perverse way, kind of gives me heart.

I can't see how spending more money would be able to delay the process (remember the Inspector doesn't want 'rabbits pulled out of hats' from Lewes DC) - and even if it does, it would only be by a couple of days. Otherwise, they would have a lot of questions to answer about where the money was going.

The points in parts (3) and (4) are obvious. David Rogers has talked about a 'reconciliation' when Prescott makes his announcement. But we are now way past this. These scumbags would never be allowed to set foot in the stadium.

What are we up to now? £155,000? That's obscene. Don't they realise how much a stadium at Falmer will help their town? Dickheads.

Has this extra £21,000 actually been approved yet?

Ann De Vecchi and her friends want to destroy the Albion, don't really give a toss about sport, local people or Lewes itself. They talk about conservation but what they really want to preserve is an artificial Sussex that suits their own needs.

They are treating their electorate with contempt and have been under-estimated by many of us. They are determined to win.

Has anyone thought about getting a group of people and knocking on some doors in Lewes to tell the public what's going on with this council and how they're ripping off the public.

This stadium is 4 miles outside of Lewes....wtf is this poxy council up to.

Could we print some leaflets and hand them out in Lewes to the shoppers? Let them know what the council is doing with our money.
I'd be willing and also to deliver them to letterboxes in Newhaven.

What people need to do is put leaflets through peoples doors becuase people under Lewes District Council do not know how much money is being spent and wasted.

We are paying over 30.00 a week council tax and not once has Lewes District Council asked for my opinion.

We all need to get together asap and sit outside Lewes District Council offices with flyers and banners and get the message across that what they are doing is wrong. This stadium does not effect anyone in Lewes it 4 miles away and secondly like I said before people under LDC need to know where there money is going.

I will hand out leaflets in Seaford if this gets off the ground. It would cost a fair amount in printing costs though.
I have E-mailed everyone at the council, not that they will take any notice.

Update, Mr Rogers replied within minutes and blames Mr Prescott.

I think handing out flyers outside the council offices is an excellent idea. If you are looking for volunteers, then count me in.

Letter in todays Sussex Express;
Lewes District Council announced last week that with savings it hopes to keep it's council tax increase to a well above inflation 5% or less. Perhaps they should save money by stopping spending our money fighting improving sporting facilities in the area. They have already spent over £150,000 on their campaign, against the wishes of the majority of people in the district, fighting the proposed stadium at Falmer.
How much more of our money are they willing to squander on this?
