Spurs reckon they've landed a bloody bargain. 1.5 mill does sound on the cheap side of cheap. Will be very interesting to learn what the clauses are.

Spurs land bargain Zamora

By Raoul Simons and Leo Spall, Evening Standard
18 July 2003

Tottenham have landed Bobby Zamora for the bargain price of £1.5million.

The 22-year-old striker should complete his move to White Hart Lane today after the club agreed a performance-related deal with Brighton.

The overall fee could rise if Zamora is a success at Tottenham.

Zamora's agent Jon Smith would not confirm the amounts involved, but said: "I am sure Spurs fans will think they have got a bargain, while Brighton chairman Dick Knight will also be happy with the deal."

Smith also suggested that the player had been a Spurs supporter since childhood. A similar claim was made about his new strike partner Helder Postiga after he joined for £6.25m move from Porto last month.

Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle has been monitoring the progress of former West Ham trainee Zamora for nearly two years and his patience has paid off because the striker was originally valued at £5m.

But Spurs are still keen to bolster their attack further and West Ham striker Freddie Kanoute remains top of Hoddle's wanted list.

Tottenham have so far failed to agree a fee with West Ham and the two clubs are about £1.5m apart. However, with Zamora arriving for less than many expected and several players set to leave, a deal of around £4m may still be possible.

Regardless of whether the Kanoute move happens, Spurs remain determined to rejuvenate his squad.

Steffen Iversen is in negotiations with newlypromoted Wolves and Hoddle has already agreed a cutprice deal with Leicester to offload full-back Ben Thatcher. Darren Anderton's free transfer to Portsmouth could also be revived. But the next stage in Spurs' rebuilding is the arrival of Zamora, who has a prolific record in the Nationwide League and is an England Under-21 international. He has scored 76 goals in just 123 league games for Brighton.

Tottenham's director of football David Pleat said: "Bobby has been excellent and is a very honest player with good skills.

"For a lot of last season he had to play up front on his own and his scoring record was still in double figures in what was a difficult situation for the team.

"I am sure if the transfer goes through he will be a valuable player for us."

I beg to differ.

Correct me if I am wrong, but has not zammo been named in every U21 squad since he was first picked ( including 1 or 2 when he was injured!!)

In the last three years he has been our club. He alone won us promotion based on the goals and contribution he had made. Last year we made a disasterous start to the season by losing 12 on the trot of which he played precious little games because of injury

Exactly, we are all entitled to our opinion and I for one have supported DK to the hilt, but no-one is immune from critisism and in my opinion, I think DK is not the tremendous "manger" we all believe him to be. There have been cock-ups galore ( shirts Hinshelwood, etc) and as in all jobs critisism must be taken on the chin as well as the plaudits when things go well. Which I do and no doubt you do in your job.

Yes hindsight is a wonderful thing

..you're having a f***ing laugh

1. Zamora was on a long term contract
2. Zamora is an established U21 International
3. Zamora will be a future England International
4. Zamora was our club.
5. Zamora was the future of Brighton and Hove Albion

So we give Bristol Rovers half a million and Dick gives all the remaining £1 million to Steve. Can anyone else see that happening!!!

If one penny goes into the Falmer fund, I for one will be seriously f***ed off.

I am not a happy bunny at the moment. I knew he was going and good luck to him, but £1.5 million is a disgrace.

I cannot disagree DTG, will you have my babies ?

And to all those who say its all we could get, then why did we sell him?????

Wasn't going to come onto NSC this morning but found a bit of time... an analogy for you:

If you own a house (1) worth £500,000 in 1999, you can sell it, and move into another house (2) worth £500,000. It is very likely that the house will be similar to the one you just sold.

If you keep house (1), and sell it in 2001 instead, for £200,000, you haven't lost out, because in 2001, house (2) has fallen with the market as well, and is now worth £200,000.

So you don't lose out, as you get your same worth out of it!!! You have not lost out on potentially selling him for £4m, because that £4m would have bought you the same players that £1.5m will do nowadays!! You haven't be done over in this respect.

The only question is that was £4m enough then, and therefore is £1.5m enough to rebuild the squad now?

Any idea if there is any add ons(e.g.we get money after a certain number of appearances).

The article would imply there is and they would be a way of getting more money for Zamora as we wouldn't have to pay any of the later fee's the Bristol Rovers.

I'll be amazed if the total fee is less than £2m. You might think Zamora would be pissed off playing for Albion next season, but the pressure on Spurs to buy a decent forward is far far greater. Imagine if Charlton, Leicester or West Ham had jumped in and got him - you can imagine the reaction of Spurs supporters if they found out they missed out on him because of penny pinching to the tune of £500k.

Personally, I bet we get £2.25m + sell on%. Good business if you ask me to get him on a long contract. Bye bye King Bobby, you deserve your chance. We got 2 promotions and a £1.5m profit on the back of your goals and your conduct through this transfer saga has been impeccable, so I'm not complaining.

Don't bother Dave. It's just one of Dick Tight's arse-wipes spreading his lies for him! Look at his post count! :tosser: :tosser:

100-200k available for squad strengthening, taking into account projected wages and that would get us about 1 player.

Aaahh Mullers, you say the nicest things! I think I've made 4 or 5 posts in the last 3 years or so, and two of those were about Trotster and her new job in the G&D. Bit sad when someone is judged by a web-site post count, sorry to have wasted your time, I'll crawl back into the shadows after this one........

Dave, it wasnt my intention to understate Zamora's ability or contribution to the club, but personally I dont really feel that 3/4 caps at under 21 level really carries much weight in a transfer like this. It was a strange feeling watching him playing in those games on TV, a throw back to seeing Johnny Byrne playing for the Republic on Sportsnight a decade or so ago, makes you very proud. However, I think his contribution to the club as a whole sits well below Micky Adams, and I really cant stand that bloke.

Adams became the supporters "Mr Brighton and Hove Albion", he was the catalyst for the turnaround on the pitch. Zamora and Cullip took on that mantle when he left, and someone else will step up now that Bobby has (almost) gone. Zamora was just one part, albeit a major one, of a club on the up.

If someone came along with the desire and financial muscle to take over the running of the club, and I'm sure there are those out there capable of doing a better job than Dick Knight, I would be excited by the prospect of BHA heading towards the next level. However, I'm also very aware, as many others are, of the damage the wrong person could do. Been there, done it. So until that lunatic Ruski rolls up with millions of spondoola's to waste on a ground and players, I'll be thankful that Knight is at the helm, hopefully doing what's best for the club, and that Archer & Bellotti are now thankfully a distant memory.

Sure mate, it's your money and you can do what you want when you go through the tuenstiles.

It's a shame you don't spend more time supporting the club thogh, as constant whining instead of getting behind the team does not tend to make the players play any better. It's costs a fortune to support the Albion, why noty enjoy it a bit more

Ormerod went to Southampton for £1.75 million and there's no doubt Zamora's a better player than him so £1.5 million is a disgrace.

Ormerod was sold prior to the collapse of ITV digital, at that time Leeds would have expected to sell Kewell for £20 million plus, but times have changed since then........unless you are Chelski

The £1.5m that is being quoted is what we get out of the deal.

I don't think we realistically could have got any better.

£2.25m???? Where do you get your information from Bald Gull? You must be living in a dream land
