As usual we made a pigs ear of the group matches in '98. But for Beckham's silly red card and the ref disallowing a perfectly good goal by Sol Campbell against the Argies we should have gone on to do well. Not many teams come back from a goal behind to the Argies in those days and make them look so ordinary. We would have been on the crest of a wave. But then not many teams would let David Batty take a penalty in a World Cup shoot out.
'98 saw the the emergence of future Albion stars (if you believe certain NSCers - haha) Beckham and Michael Owen who scored 'that' goal and whose partnership with Shearer would have frightened a few defences in the latter stages, if we had progressed. At least Hoddle knew how to play with a bit of flair, even if he needed help from a faith healer or whatever she was.
I know it's a case of 'what ifs' and 'buts'..............
