Whingy is a good lad, and an 'honest pro'.

Trouble is, we've advanced so far, in such a short space of time, that a player with his attributes is no longer required.

He'll do a great job for someone
In a nutshell. Whingy is a typical 'English' player. Undoubtedly he possess in abundance those abilities that typical English football fans curiuosly rate so highly (workrate, passion, committment, etc) but he's not a gifted, skilful, talented player. Consequently there's no place for him in a modern 'continental-style' football team and he's best off going to a club where they play a more 'English' game. (Perhaps he could take some of the 'Get it forward!' fans with him).

If that sounds like I'm damming him with faint praise I'm really not. He did a great job for us in the Adams/Slade eras, but our football is more sophisticated now.

Players that can/have played Right Back are.
El-Abd, Kishishev, Bennett, Hart, Elphick, Cook,

Interestingly of all those options I think Bennett is the one I would go with if Calde was out.

That is partly because we have more midfield cover in the squad than we do full back cover, and partly that, while I think he is good enough in his current role to play in the Championship, if he were to go up to the Premier League right now that is the role I would envisage for him. As a full back in the Cole/Johnson mould I think he could make a real impact.

We'll see won't we

Hopefully!

But why write someone off before they've had a chance?

And why such anti-Whing bias? He did a great job for us in his first season and he was far and away our best player that year. His contribution was what pushed some other pro's to give as much as he was.

Whing deserves credit for doing a job for us when called upon and then for being dignified enough to not rant and rave about the way things are going.

Considering the idolising people go for with the likes of Lynch, who was a woeful centreback and a good centreback and whose attitude was shoddy at best, I find this whole thing marginally ridiculous.

Good luck to him - he did a good job for us. It's just that we've got a better right back now. Still wouldn't mind keeping him as cover, though.

O's manager Slade is delighted to have added Whing to his squad, saying; "Andy will give us more strength in depth defensively.

"He can play right back, left back or centre back so he'll be a useful acquisition at this stage of the season.

"You need to build up one or two numbers as you go into the winter months as suspensions and injuries kick in.

"Andy's a really good type so I'm pleased that we've got his signature."

Well personally I'll miss his attitude and commitment to the side, and I can't understand some of the negative comments about the bloke. I agree with those who say that our football has evolved, but I don't think it's fair to suggset he couldn't do a job any more for us when he last made a league appearance almost a year ago. How many opportunities has he had in a first team environment to show whether he could make the adjustment? If Adam el-Abd could do it, why not Whing?

But I'm not going to criticise Gus - he sees him in training every week and his judgement has been spot on so far. I just think it's a shame that somebody who always gave his all for the shirt, and didn't bitch when he wasn't in the team, leaves with some negative comments aimed at him.

I suspect many of the adverse comments are from people who watched his contribution at Northampton when he was generally very poor. An appalling pass lead to their second goal, was slow coming back, still had the chance to clear, and made no attempt to. Ran hard but too often out of position and poor communication. Only one game but it might unfortunately have been enough.

That said the guy is an honest and likeable pro who never gave less than his all and I will always be a fan. Yes he could do a job but unfortunately in a side that lives or dies by the quality of its passing it's maybe not the job we need.

I suspect many of the adverse comments ....
But there aren't really many adverse comments. There's 32 posts on this thread, and only four or five are wholly critical - and three of them are from Dougal! Most people are saying what you're saying, which is basically: "did a good job but probably not what we need now."
