I always thought stamps were 26p still however 60p to send a letter across the country is still good value...

The thing is, Royal Mail are now regulated by Ofcom rather than Postcom and they, in their infinite wisdom have allowed Royal Mail to set the tariffs themselves.

There are many other business mail services most would not even had heard of and these are also subjected to large price hikes and from April 2nd will be subject to VAT.

I work in the mailing business and most of my customers have already intimated they will no longer be sending mail in the volumes they do now. Bad times ahead for my Industry.

It's certainly not good value for business or the consumer. Everyone will end paying more their goods. 14p on a stamp is a big price increase. I hope someone else comes in now and offers a postage service.

Hopefully it'll put a stop to the rubbish I get sent on a daily basis from the same companies over and over again.

They already do, its called Downstream Access but at present you would have to get your mail to a Mailing House and let them deal with it. Final mile delivery is still carried out by Royal Mail.

Didn't know that. I wonder when we will start getting a choice of post boxes on the street. Royal mail and other.

Not in the near future, only Royal Mail have the infrastructure in place to deliver nationwide which is why the Independents still rely on Royal Mail for final mile delivery.

Unless DHL (for example) decide to work in partnership with Dairy Crest (for example) and the milkman starts delivering post as well.

Where there is a willingness to think outside the box there is always a solution to save money.

Express dairies tried this about 8 years ago, sadly it didn't work that well, post being delivered that early in the morning and dogs who like to have a bit of a bark up at the mail didn't go well.

There are plenty of options available for business mail now that are subject to large discounts but minimum volumes apply.

I am more than willing to steer people in the right direction should they need it, preferably my direction.

Unfortunately I think the problem will always boil down to universal access for an equal price. Something only the Royal Mail can currently provide. That said, there was a similar argument about TV access but then along came Sky and NTL with billions to spend.

Not in an age when you can send an e-mail for free. For parcels, some courier firms are already cheaper than the post.

The royal mail is in the main a great service, why do we insist on grinding good traditional services into the ground.

Look at the gas companies, electricity companies, bt,train companies etc they are all hugely more expensive and a lot worse since they were "released from constraint"

I have an idea why don't you keep your 80p or whatever the cost of a first class stamp will be and see haw far you get with it, you cant even get the bus into town for that much ffs

I already do thank you - anything I can send via email ( including scanning documents ) I do. If the price were say 30p for a first class stamp then I'd probably not bother but for a little investment in time I can save money, get the message there quicker AND ensure it doesn't get lost !

Maybe not, but if you're a business sending 1000 mails a week it makes a significant difference. Besides, I've just decided not to post 100 letters today, so I'm going out on the piss on what I've saved.

When you stop and think about what you actually get for your 60p its still good value.

However, like the railways and local councils it always strikes me as one of the institutions where loads of money is wasted on people to organise those actually doing the work rather than just hiring more hands and getting the work done.
