Somewhere over there...
Why does Great Britain enter the Olympics as Great Britain, not as seperate nations, ie England, Scotland and Wales, this would make it possible for us to enter a football team and for us to compete for medals for ONE nations pride, not three.

You missed out Northern Ireland, but I agree it would be nice to compete as seperate states. Can't see the Olympic Commitee agreeing though.

To maximise the medel tally suppose. Personally I like Great Britian entry. Not only do we have more chance of WINNING STUFF but its shows Northern Irland, Wales, Scotland and England can all compete with each other and surly this is a good thing.

Their so so much squabbling. Like Scotland wanting England footie team to do badly. Putting us all under one banner can only help knit us all together!

Why can't we enter a Great Britian football team? Beckham, Keane, Giggs etc?

EDIT: Dougdeep smells.

It’s because we have separate governing bodies although I think FIFA said a couple of years ago that they wouldn't mind us having a committee as long as it was only set up for the Olympics ONLY.

Oh, and Olympic teams have to be made up of U-23’s with a maximum of 3 (I think) exceptions.

We could never enter a football team in the olympics because:

1. If the olympics took place in mid season it would probably clash with the European Championships (also 4 yearly)

2. If the Olympics were like this year, in August, the premiership managers would not release the players anyway

So its doesn't really matter if we could play as GB or not

I always thought the opposite was true. I'm sure I read somewhere that a FIFA directive said that if we competed as GB in the Olympics we would be forced to do the same in the European and World Cups ?

What about all of the GB team events that have non-English members?

I'm sure that any Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish competitors would rather be able to use the British training facilities than have to rely on a smaller body funding them (the Northern Irish Olympic Committee ffs??!)

Lastly, I have no wish to see either an English or British team compete in the Olympic football tournament. It is a complete waste of time to start with, and should be removed from the Olympic list of sports.

I believe the reason is to do with sport politics. Certain FIFA members are keen on having a UK (or GB) team, as this would reduce the number of European FIFA members. At present, Europe has more members than any other FIFA region, and therefore gets to call the shots on any big issue they can agree on. By reducing the UK from 4 votes to 1, this would reduce the size of Europe's bloc vote.

The 4 home countries insist to FIFA that it is politically impossible to have a UK team, so to enter one in the Olympics would undermine this argument.
