LBC today, apparently these drivers are doing this for nothing. The reason why it took 4 hours was because the drivers had not been trained up properly as regards the route and where using the satnav for directions.
Got to hand it to these people, would you want to drive around London for nothing carrying top class athletes?
Your statement re May might not be all that inaccurate, but equally, all that article shows is the outside of a few portakabins. We have no idea what they're like inside.

Couldn't make it up? Probably wouldn't bother, more like, as it's such a non-story. So a couple of coaches are late, big deal. What about the other hundred or so that were fine?
