Have I missed something!?

Shearer is paid a fortune by the BBC to tell us all about football, but famously knows very little about his subject.

Like when Newcastle signed Hatem Ben Arfa, and Shearer said he'd never heard of him.

The list of players with Olympic medals isn't to be sniffed at. Admittedly as mentioned the South America's do take it more seriously but they're are still some of the biggest names in football.

Players with an Olympic Gold Medal:
Sergio Agüero
Javier Mascherano
Lionel Messi
Ezequiel Lavezzi
Juan Román Riquelme
Javier Saviola
Carlos Tévez
Roberto Ayala
Fabricio Coloccini
Gabriel Heinze
Samuel Eto'o
Jay-Jay Okocha
Nwankwo Kanu

Players with an Olympic Silver Medal:
Carles Puyol
Xavi
Diego Simeone
Javier Zanetti
Hernán Crespo
Romário
Bebeto
Dunga

Players with an Olympic Bronze Medal:
Thiago Silva
Dida
Ronaldo
Roberto Carlos
Rivaldo
Andrea Barzagli
Giorgio Chiellini
Daniele Bonera
Andrea Pirlo
Daniele De Rossi
Anderson
Lucas
Ronaldinho
Ramires

Thanks for that, undoubtedly big names in there.

With team GB only being able to select 3 players over the age of 23, is that just us or for all teams competing as well? Looking at those players a lot of them look like the start 11 national teams.

Didn't we always have a rule to play our England amateur team at the Olympics. It was always a laugh to see them up against top world teams although I never actually watched an Olympic football match. Now we have our young professional players in the "British" squad. Guess what. I still don't care and have no plans to watch any of the games.

ps I might be tempted to watch a Paralympic game of footie. Are we fielding a squad for that too?

Think its rich that Richards gets in the squad, when he refused to be on standby for the Euro squad. Obviously thinks he is better than he is. Anyone should want to play for their country and Pearce should not have picked him for the Olympics. Double Standards as far as I am concerned. Even more of a kick in the nuts for Beckham taking an over 23 place.

No chance, with only Sturridge anywhere near a decent standard, the last team Pearce will ever manage...he had a chance to raise morale with Beckham, but his smallmindedness has simply left GB to play some dreadfully dull football & get knocked out at the first opportunity. Olympic miss to add to penalty miss, fine legacy

Am I the only one thinking that the squad actually looks half decent? I think there are some seriously good young players in the squad, and I think we're going to hear a lot more about the less well known names there going forward next year. Think as long as Pearce plays as good a game as he talks, then we should be ok.

Yes, you have. Which of the 18 haven't you heard of? I'm genuinely intrigued. Do you not watch much football outside of the Albion? That's not a mocking question, or meant in a mocking tone just so you know, I know it will come across that way.

Not everybody has, or even wants, Sky, and not everybody finds Premier League very engaging.

BBC has quite a good guide to the squad (for those equally as ignorant as me!) :

To be honest I don't watch much football at all, didn't even watch much of last nights final. I genuinely only interested in Brighton watch every home game some away and when they are on the box. Don't ever watch the prem, overpaid wasters in my opinion and I'm not interested. When it comes to football it's only the Albion I am interested in

That's fair enough, I'm not being critical. In contrast, I watch far too much football and unfortunately have seem most of the players selected play at some point or another. Craig Dawson is one who most people won't know, but he played against us for Rochdale at Withdean a couple of years ago. Quality player who was then snapped up by West Brom, he kept Dunk out of the England under 21 team when he was selected.

So are you happy with the squad?

No-one obvious is missing, apart from. Beckham who remains a much better player than any of them. Butland will probably start as number 1, despite Steele looking brilliant in the Championship last season. Defensively we look ok, very short of right backs but Bertrand is a decent left back. It isn't a squad to win the tournament though. We have quite literally no good young strikers. Welbeck and Carroll are streets ahead of the rest, and they're both technically very poor.

I've seriously not heard of most of those players. Who are they?

"Picked on footballing merit" has proven to be bollocks, Beckham's exclusion is a disgrace and Stuart Pearce is a twat.

Heard of:

Micah Richards (Manchester City), Ryan Giggs (Manchester United), Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal), Craig Bellamy (Liverpool), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea).

Don't have a bloomin' clue who they are:

Jack Butland (Birmingham), Jason Steele (Middlesbrough); Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea), Steven Caulker (Tottenham), Craig Dawson (West Brom), Neil Taylor (Swansea), James Tomkins (West Ham); Joe Allen (Swansea), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Jack Cork (Southampton), Danny Rose (Tottenham), Scott Sinclair (Swansea); Marvin Sordell (Bolton).

the lack of football knowledge on this board is incredible........especially as some of those played against the albion last season
