The slightly more civilised (but still import grade) Camels with filter
To the somewhat more challenging filter-free French (Algerian, I recon) Disc Bleu....

Mmmmmm.....in these desiccated and smoke free days....one only wonders at the horror we pursued in the persuit of that . . . sensation.

Was a B&H man then a Marlboro Lights until the switch to baccy when 20 went over a fiver a packet.

Bought 200 Ducados once as the were cheap. They were nasty, made Marlboro Red seem like Kylie’s farts.

Woodbine were filterless and a rough smoke. When they became harder to find I switched to JPS, then B&H, then Marlboro Gold when it seemed they might kill me more slowly.

After I quit smoking as a permanent habit, I tried American Spirit (which claimed to do without all the additives) and which predictably smoked like an over-fat roll-up, or a spliff without the good bit.

After being fascinated by various books set in Edwardian times where cigarettes were always offered as a choice of “Turkish or Virginian” and noting that almost all modern cigarettes were “Virginian” I found a tobacconist in London that still offered the Turkish variety. They were a different type of smoke, in some ways smoother, but with a different smell and lighter taste. They were pricey even then, about a decade ago.

I treat myself to a pack when I’m on holiday or a celebration occasionally, but I average about two packs a year now. I figure I’m not doing my lungs much more harm than walking alongside a traffic jam at that level.

Never got on with American cigarettes with an overdose of saltpetre in them.

Cigarette of choice was Piccadilly and if I had a shit cold and was coughing my guts up I’d switch to Consulate, “cool as a mountain stream”

You were lucky. 10 No10 and a book of matches used to see us through a night at Easthill yoof club. (Funnily enough in H's manor )

The next 30 years were spent on Marlborough, Gitanes (poseur) Sobranie cocktail (very expensive girlfriend) Marlborough lights, Rothmans and Silk Cut.

I was rather partial to an Embassy when I first smoked. Though I was never brand loyal at any point as I took the word of Mary Poppins that "a change is as good as a rest" and if I ever saw a packet I'd never tried I'd go for that.
I did rather like bidis when in India though I expect they are actually incredibly rough if you haven't been hitting a chillum recently. The Chinese Wujiang cigarettes that made their way through the mountain passes into Ladakh also hold fond memories.

Fortunately haven’t smoked in over 30 years But was JPS black, silk cut or golden Virginia for roll ups. In the RN we got cheap ciggies called ‘blue liners’ which were an abomination but scarily cheap!

My first ever fag was at age 9 in the toilets of the new bowling alley at Hove Station - a Guards tipped cigarette I recall. Started a terrible habit that lasted around 40 years. Park Drive, Players No.6 and Piccadilly. Thankfully off them in my more senior years. Hate to think of the money wasted on those things over those years.

Age 10 a friend stole 50p from his mum’s purse to buy Embassy fags. We had a bash at smoking them in an abandoned half-underground cinema in hotel grounds. I was sh1t at it, never trying again, except for someone getting me to try dope at a party in Brighton when I was about 17, similarly dope when at uni in a halls of residence. Again I couldn’t get the hang of it.
