[Food] Old Recipes and Butchers who sell Rabbit

I had a chat with my Mum on Thursday and we were talking about things we used to eat and very rarely have these days. Back when I was growing up one of my mates had ferrets and another a greyhound and we used to regularly catch rabbits over the downs, bring them home and having Rabbit Stew. Ever since Thursday I've been having a craving for Rabbit.

So can anyone suggest a local butcher that sells Rabbits, preferably local, but failing that Chinese ? (I do know of a very good restaurant that does a brilliant Rabbit and lentil dish but unfortunately it's in the Mountains of Majorca).

And any suggestions for other 'old' recipes that have gone out of fashion ?

Is the South African butchers in Eldred Ave not still there ? You used to be able to order almost any meat from them. If not you could contact Wickendens in Hangleton as they take orders for meats they don't normally stock.

I do remember being in Wickendens some years ago when a van pulled up outside. Bloke goes in, quick conversation in hushed tones with Butcher, back out to van, comes in with half a dozen rabbits :wink:

I had one but this was many years ago and when I asked more recently they didn't have any, could only get Chinese and no call for them :(

And tried Butcher at Rushfields today - no luck

I'll give Eldred Avenue a try (y)

I can remember Sainsbury's selling frozen rabbit, but that was a fair few years ago.

Shout out for bacon pudding - rashers of bacon wrapped up in a suet pudding, steamed. and eaten with a splash of malt vinegar. For vegetarians it's the only thing that makes veggie rashers almost OK (need to add a bit of salt to the pudding mix) and of course you can get veggie suet these days too.

Edit: have you tried looking on line for a butcher with a licence to sell game?

Shout out for bacon pudding - rashers of bacon wrapped up in a suet pudding, steamed. and eaten with a splash of malt vinegar. For vegetarians it's the only thing that makes veggie rashers almost OK (need to add a bit of salt to the pudding mix) and of course you can get veggie suet these days too.
I'm sure we used to do that with an OXO cube crumbled over the bacon (y)

I think the suet might prove a stumbling point for most vegetarians.

Try a Game Dealer if you want wild Rabbit, there has been a lot of myxomatosis last few years though and numbers are way down on 10 years ago.

My Grandad used to work as a trackman on the railways. We always had rabbit. Loved it.
The conversation we were actually having was about my Mum's grandfather, who apparently used to keep half a dozen hutches in the garden for Rabbits for the pot. Fed them on scraps (carrot tops, dandelions, various weeds etc,) very low fat healthy meat and apparently, they bred like Rabbits.

Very green, sustainable and cheap, but I don't think I would get it past Mrs Wz :rolleyes:

Out of fashion meals?

I give you liver... as cheap as chips and very hearty and delicious with onions and (optional) bacon.

I've always loved Liver but have found recently that Supermarket pre packed liver seems to be awful. I always used to like lambs liver but the only good liver I've had in the last couple of years has been calves Liver from a Butcher ???

I've just realised I'm edging slowly but inexorably into @BensGrandad territory :angel:

Can’t remember the name but the butchers in Steyning sold deboned rabbit. Love game meat myself and a shame it’s in such decline seeing as it is traditional British fare.
