There was a BBC R5 series of brilliant docs on the same them, 25 years ago. With the full history going back to the 19th century, the songs on both sides.

Having a fair amount of experience up there, lots of chats with folk and going to games, I have the impression that sectarianism outside of the football is far, far smaller than it was say 40 years ago. It’s almost died a death. Although the split of schools keeps folk apart to an extent.

It’s now really the rivalry of the two giant clubs on a match-day and inevitably in this age internet stoking/hatred.

I was in Glasgow at the weekend and went to the Rangers v St Mirren game. I have to say that everyone I met in the city, irrespective of their allegiance/religion etc was incredibly friendly, far more so than I expected. I haven’t been to see Celtic yet but might return to do that another time. Then got chatting with Chris Sutton who was on the same flight home and got his view on such things. I had always put Glasgow down as a place to avoid but this trip definitely changed my opinion - I’ll probably still give it a wide berth on an Old Firm weekend though!!

I've only been to Glasgow the once for a couple of days, but I fell in love with it pretty much the moment I left the train station. Great place, as numerous people from other parts of the country who've visited or moved there have told me as well.

Not just Glasgow, back in the day. I was born and grew up in Edinburgh in the late 60s/early 70s, before moving down here aged 8; we were mostly Hearts where I lived, but a huge influx of families from the slum clearances in Glasgow turned us overnight into Celtic supporters (more-or-less on pain of death!). Edinburgh was properly sectarian in those days: my grandfather wouldn't work with a Catholic, for example, so god only knows what he thought of his grandson's instant conversion to The Other Side. The only thing stronger, really, was the all-pervading anti-Englishness. I was once chased around our estate by a baying mob of other tiny hoolies for a real kicking after my father, an atheist from Brighton and thus not really understanding the seriousness of my question, told me I was C of E so "technically an Anglo-Catholic": imagine the joy of my wee Protestant pals when I told them. Bad enough being a Fenian, but an ANGLO-Fenian... I must've been halfway to the Vatican before they caught me...

I just watched this, very interesting.

The Glasgow author chappie definitely doesn’t give Rangers a good press, does he? On the other hand they then switch across to the Celtic supporters in a bar singing about joining the IRA .

It makes Albion v Palace seem like a love-in by comparison!
