Here's a controversial question then. The Royal Albion & Queens Hotel have both seen better days and must cost a fortune to run. Guessing the Old Ship is much the same. Is it time to pull them down and build a more modern hotel. In West St there is a huge gap where the nightclub was and in its place we are getting a Premier Inn. Comments about the eyesore of the Kings West and Brighton Centre may be true now but both buildings were modern in their day.

Parts of the Royal Albion and The Old Ship are Grade II listed so cannot be demolished. Part of a facade of the Queens is of historical interest, so unsure of the position there.

the big problem is that over decades planners have allowed countless architecturally beautiful buildings to be demolished and replaced with modern. Sadly so many have turned out to be dated, hideously decrepit blots that have done nothing to make Brighton nice. I’m sure there must be the odd one or two that don’t fall into that group. Plus one man’s blot is another man’s liked. So subjective isn’t it.

The more I look at these photo comparisons you’re posting the more I think how shit Brighton & Hove looks now compared to yesteryear 😢
It also highlights what's missing on the high street - the North Street picture shows there used to be an undertakers just up from the clock tower. Handy.

Seems strange that the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company had an information bureau in the middle of Brighton.

In the Cannon Place photo there is a dog in the foreground. And there it is again in Bedford St. Spooky!
