was just on the bbc football website and the league 1 page shows the current table. we are currently 2nd, our points scored and goal difference obviously being the same as everone else's.

but was just wondering, what determines a club's position in the table once the usual separators have failed. i know it goes points > gd > goals scored, but then is it results against the other team in question? does it ever get alphabetical? and if so, has alphabetical advantage ever been used to separate teams the end of a season, or even determine a relegation/promotion spot?

don'y think its ever been used although in the good old days of goal average one team in the sixties were champions by 0. something of a goal

7. Subject to Rule B.29, if any 2 or more Clubs have scored the same number of points, have the same goal difference and have scored the same number of goals in League Matches in that Season they shall be deemed to occupy the same position in the table.

I would think that in the event of promotion/relegation places the teams will have a play-off.

I think there was a debate about this a few years ago; with about 2 games to go two teams vying for one relegation spot could have potentially ended up matching entirely. The answer was they would either have a play-off or it would simply be down to the toss of a coin (as cup games were at one stage before they introduced penalty shoot outs). Alphabetical order would never be used.

Wasn't around in the 60s but surely if they are using goal average (I presume you mean per game) then most teams would be seperated by 0.?, since to get to more than 0.x you would have to have one team scoring around 40 more goals in a season than the next team! It's the equivalent of using goals scored now before using goal difference (which I think is the case in some leagues).

It's the equivalent of using goals scored now before using goal difference (which I think is the case in some leagues).

I thought goal average was goals for/goals against. in Aussie rules its called percentage but the same thing really.

Points / goal difference / goals scored are the only things used to separate clubs

It has happened (occasionally) for teams to finish level on all these criteria. In this instance, the teams are considered to have finished equal.

It has never happened in a significant place in the table where promotion, relegation, play offs or Europe have been on the line.

Alphabetical order is only used as a convenient way of separating clubs when it's not the end of the season.

I know in the 1990 world cup, Ireland and Holland had the same points, goal difference and goals scored as each other. The match was a 1-1 draw so they tossed a coin to see who would come second in the group.

Ireland won the toss and then beat Romania, and Holland lost to West Germany

Here in Argentina it's a play-off if two teams are level on points and the position is significant. None of this goal difference, goal average or goals scored business. Not even a Spanish-style head-to-head separation.

In the early 70's, bournemouth & boscombe Athletic became AFC Bournemouth in a john Bond idea to jazz up the name and so they would be top of the league, alphabetically at least.
