There is really no good reason for making that noise - it is nothing to do with effort of the shot. I never watch Kourikova because of it (ok, there may be other reasons to watch her). It seems to be purely unsportsmanlike behaviour designed to put off the opposition. I remember when I was being coached, we were encouraged to do something similar (but not to that extreme), when you hit the ball to "time" your shot, and make sure your power "explodes" as you hit it. Even the players that do it, don't do it all the time ,so it is clearly not necessary - but I also can't see how you'd ban it.
