The life of a protester fighting to stop Tesco opening a new store on a community garden site was saved by one of the supermarket giant's own staff.

The victim was asleep and just minutes from death as smoke filled a building he and other campaigners had occupied at the garden in Lewes Road, Brighton.

The alarm was only raised after Tesco stock controller Paul Arnold saw plumes of smoke as he walked to work at 5.16am, Friday.

Firefighters were unable to get in because campaigners had barricaded the main door of the building.

One of the protesters who was asleep in the building managed to crawl out through another exit as fire fighters climbed a ladder and smashed their way through a first floor window.

Other campaigners were still asleep in the community garden and were unaware of the danger the victim, who has not been named, was in.

Father-of-two Mr Arnold said: “There was black smoke coming out of the top of the building and it was immediately clear something was wrong so I called the fire brigade.

“It was not until I saw a report about the fire on The Argus website that I realised someone was inside the building.”

The 31-year-old, who works at Tesco Express in Queen's Road, Brighton, added: “The irony of a Tesco employee saving the life of a protester who is trying to keep Tesco out was not lost on me.”

Dave Statham, watch manager at Preston Circus fire station, said they had been called to the site earlier on Thursday night after smoke was seen.

But found only protesters, who have dug in to prevent a development that could include a Tesco store, enjoying a barbecue.

It’s thought Friday morning’s blaze had been sparked by a naked flame.

Mr Statham said: "If we had not received the call and arrived when we did he could have died.

“Most people do not realise that in a fire it is smoke that kills and people can die in a matter of minutes.”

'Delicious' irony?

Another day, another post where Thick Timmy proves himself to be the spiteful little cunt he is renowned for being.

I take it you wrote that yourself. If definition of thick has suddenly changed to living in a property I own outright and bringing up my own children based on the income of other investments, then yes I must be a right dunce!

I didn't think there was any form of building on the site. I was under the impression there was just a garden there.
Has the Argus got it wrong again?

You sanctimonious twat!

What an irony that Shirley Porter, ex tory leader of Westminster council and heiress of the Tesco millions,
was convicted of fraud, fined £37 million and ran away to Israel without paying a penny of the fine!

You would find that ironic, most would find that tragic.
Tory scum.

Why would anyone find it tragic? Nobody died or suffered serious injury. I'd have thought most objective people could see a certain irony in the story.

An HB&B post is like a car crash, you know you'll be repulsed by what you see but you are still compelled to look.

The irony is that if Tescos didn't exist perhaps he wouldn't have to get up so early and would have a more interesting job.

Also that probably Tesco's will now dock his wages for being late in and sack him for saving someone who was fighting them.

Ha! "stock controller"!!!!

Is that the Tescos name for early morning unloader and shelf stacker?

What is ironic, it was your, "up your own arse post's" that got up everyones nose in the first place, all the time going on about what you had when many were and still are worried about how to feed there familys, that was when the recession started, you still do it now, you just don't know when to stop.

I don't know any other poster on NSC thast goes on about what they have got apart from you, I appreciate you don't care what others think, and thats your perogotive, but just try being a bit sensitive at times, and think before you type.

No, one of my definitions of thick in this instance is the near glee with which you post about someone who isn't such a spiteful cunt as you are who might have died defending what they believe in.

As for your definition, if that's what you think the word mean, perhaps you are thick.

Actually, no 'perhaps' about it.

SO what do you do for a living, and what right do you have to take the piss out this blokes job, you are so far up your own arse you cant get out.

I take it you wrote that yourself. If definition of thick has suddenly changed to living in a property I own outright thanks to the wife's moneyand bringing up my own children strictly speaking, she raises them. I can barely take a shit without feeling the need to tell NSC based on the income of other investments that my wife has, then yes I must be a right dunce!

Corrected it for you.
