I’m just getting exasperated with the constant ref-baiting I guess, as it feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy that if you tell someone they are useless often enough, don’t be surprised that they turn out to be useless. Not sure what can be done. If a whole new load of refs were magically shipped in, by this time next season they’d probably all be “useless” too.

I do agree, and to be honest I’m pretty bad like that as well, even when trying to be objective.

Highly likely re any new refs, but IMO something needs to happen.

He’ll be broadly fine, like most refs in most games. Yes, he’ll probably make a few mistakes in the midst of a fast-paced game contested by 22 highly-skilled, testosterone-charged athletes, all looking to gain an edge. But so what?

The mistakes that ultimately decide the result will be made by the players, yet the mistakes that increasingly define the narrative for days after will be the ones made by the ref. Ref-baiting after every game is getting corrosive now. Managers and supporters looking for someone to blame for a disappointing result, and subsequently going after the ref, are looking in the wrong place.

Most supporters slagging off refs after every game (and increasing before the game has even happened) probably couldn’t even run for 9 minutes, never mind 90 plus. Just let the refs get on with it and support them or we’ll end up with no refs of consequence at all.

For me the biggest problems are not with a particular person but with lack of consistency in decisions made not only over a season but sometimes over one weekend. As a great example at the start of the season a lot was made about discipline and the running off with the ball or kicking it away when a foul was given against your team. Our game against Wolves away at least two of our players were carded, yet now that all seems to have been forgotten about. It is confusing when you watch an Albion match and see a decision made regarding a foul or yellow card only to watch MOTD later and see the same scenario at another match with a different outcome.
The same inconsistencies are found in VAR use i.e. whether they should or should not be getting involved with a situation and obviously differing outcomes for the same set of circumstances. I would urge Howard Webb to get all of his officials singing off of the same hymn sheet.

The referees are alright. Can't be easy to keep your cool, when you have a bunch of overpaid, over egoed arseholes screaming in your face.
Over zealous protests should carry the risk of a points deduction. They'll be less pressure on the men in the middle, but maybe more injuries from bitten tongues....or give the ref the power to chin one of 'em

Yes - thought he was very good. The red only really looked a red on replays, and can see why he gave the penalty.

Should Van Hecke have seen red? He denied a goal scoring opportunity and wasn’t a genuine attempt to play the ball i.e. the double jeopardy law doesn’t come into play.

Definitely a red, clear swing resulting in facial contact, intention in that scenario is not mitigation in my view.
