I've just read that the official site suggests travelling via the M27 and A34 as a way of avoiding the Heathrow roadworks.

Well I'm sorry to disappoint you, but you should check out this site first :

http://www.a34m4.com/

The A34 / M4 junction ( number 13 on the M4 ) also has major roadworks to construct a new underpass. I travel through it every day to get to and from work.

I would try to avoid this junction if you can !

We'll be going a-la our Swindon route. M23, M25, M3, A329, M4.

I wouldn't touch the A27 / M27 route with a shitty stick.

I drove up the A34 last week and joined the M4 at this junction. It is a bit of a mess at the moment but I was not held up for that long. The biggest problem is that you need to make sure you get in & stay in the inside lane as you approach the roadworks on the A34. It ain't well signposted until you get right into the traffic cones and lane diversions that this is where you have to be for the M4 Eastbound. If you find you are in the wrong lane it can take some serious battling to force your way over to the inside.

Otherwise take the old A4 at Newbury and join the M4 at the J14 if it is really bad.

PS. Watch out for the mobile speed cameras on the A34!

Going through it yesterday morning a lorry had broken down right at the traffic lights, making all the traffic filter through one lane. The tailback was about 2 - 3 miles down the A34 Newbury bypass. It took about 20 - 25 minutes to get through the junction.

I'd also advise going along the A4 to Hungerford & joining at junction 14 if you spot the tailback early enough.

Agreed. That's the best route.

The M25 roadworks seem to me to be well managed. Especially with few HGVs on the road (it's Sunday), traffic moves consistently at 40mph. Which is more than can be said for the Arundel approach on the A27 (especially on Sundays).

There was no problem driving to Swindon via the M25/M4 a couple of weeks back. I guess the M25/M3/A329/M4 route is OK as well.

As Easy says, do the M3 and then come off at Bracknell, following the road through to the M4. Piece of cake and has worked three times this season for BC and Swindon (twice).

Plus you have the added bonus of getting to snigger at all the towns you've only heard of because of David Brent, like
