So, a swimming post, then a cycling post......................seriously do not like the way this thread is heading. Come on, we're better than this. Next it'll be discussions about 'transition', 'racing wetsuits' and 'cleats', at which point I'm out. :flounce:


I take it that you're against the addition of a cycling column and a swimming column to the table.:whistle:

Point taken but I am expecting some incredible performances at 5k and under this year.......................................but then I do think that at the start of every year.:down:

1197 miles for me so far this year. Am already on a structured / coached plan for sub 4 attempt number 3 at Brighton in April so already know I have a 10k planned tomorrow morning which will take me just over 1200. 100 miles a month average - never thought I'd be close to that TBH.

Like [MENTION=6886]Bozza[/MENTION] I will not be running on New Year's Day. I have to take both my kids to the game, however, so the non-running is more about not having to get up and run at stupid o'clock. Also like Bozza I then intend to go dry for a fairly considerable period. A pal has a big birthday in Feb which will be my one exception otherwise I might aim for dry between 2 Jan and marathon day. I will see you over on the AF thread if I do Boz.

I'm using my phone at the moment and would like to track progress going into 2020.

When I started out I used my phone in a running sleeve, which was fine when I wasn't worried about the time or distance. As I got more into running, I found myself wanting to know the distance, more than time. I got myself a Garmin Forerunner 10 - it's as basic a model as it can be, but it tells you the distance (miles OR KM, the luxury!), the time and also can give you the option to lap your efforts (for example, if you're running 3 x 1 mile hard, you don't need to miles to be from the start of a mile, you can run your harder effort at 1.5 miles etc and then look at the time for that lap). You can pick them up for less than £50.

Apologies to [MENTION=15605]knocky1[/MENTION] today! Run straight past without a thought to who is around. He was looking like having a problem with his dog at the time! I ran 10 miles to get through the 1,700 miles barrier - running the first 5 miles in 7:33 per and the final 5 in 6:51 per. Pretty pleased with that, especially considering how challenging it was getting through the thronged masses between the Pier and Lagoon.

On the watch front, as ever a lot depends on your budget but, the Garmin forerunner 235 is probably one of the most popular out there for ‘typical’ runners. Costs around £170 though. The only drawback is it isn’t suitable for the swimming leg of triathlons although it is waterproof.

Hope to see some of you amongst the throng for NYD parkruns.

A handful of big names have been given the chop. You're all welcome to rejoin at any point but the table is getting longer and longer:clap2::clap2: so I have decided to lose a few by using a "haven't heard from you for 12 month" rule. Anyone who wants to get back on or any new NSC runners get going on your keyboard.
Remember the table changes in 2020 and will be ordered by 2020 5K times. So on NYD make sure you all give me a lot of work to do.

Must have been designed by one of our Ultra Runners. Probably also gives electric shocks if you mention cleats and such like.

You've comfortably beaten me on distance in the end. I'm at 1830 miles with just a short run planned for tomorrow.

After not doing a lot of running at the end of November and start of December I've now started to ramp things up for my Boston training. It's 5 runs a week all the way from now until 20th April. I'm feeling really good after getting some faster runs in over the last couple of weeks. I'm hoping 2020 is another good year for me. All in for the marathon and then I'll probably start concentrating on shorter races, so I won't be troubling the leaderboard until at least May.

Good luck with Boston! Lots of people now in training for marathons in the Spring. Hove seafront is now packed with runners every time I go out whereas it was only a few hardcore regulars in November. Five times a week should see you massively in shape. I'm doing 4 a week, which is all I can really fit in around the family and I'm fitter than I've been in a long time.

Not sure what my mileage target for 2020 is specifically but with Brighton Marathon, The Serpent Trail 50k and Beachy Head already booked in for me I will be aiming for even more than 1200 next year, assuming I stay injury free.

Thanks so much. I just purchased the Garmin 235 and got myself set-up on strava. Excited to track and get a bit of structure!

On NSC for over two decades...
Seems a long time since I've run regularly. But now I'm settling into my new surroundings I'm starting to get up to speed with the hilly trail routes this part of town has to offer. So up to St Martha's on the Hill it was for me this morning with over 900' of elevation gain it just over an hour - a perfect prelude to Brighton Marathon training!

Happy Hogmanay to all the runners. Aiming to start doing Park Runs in 2020. Did the Brighton 10k back in April but have had something of a psychological block about park runs. Head says if I can do 10k in 1:33 then I should be able to do 5k in about 45mins, especially as I'm a stone and a half lighter than I was in April. But heart says I'm just as old and just as asthmatic. I guess it's fear of coming last and/or keeping the stewards hanging around while I part jog, part speed walk to the finish. Guess I just need a bit of reassurance from anybody whose done a bit of stewarding. Cheers.

I'm done for 2019.

Went out yesterday for 10 miles on the road, taking in some of Worthing seafront on what was a gorgeous day. I generally do my longer runs on Sunday evenings meaning I see more foxes than people. The crowds on the seafront made for a few interesting moments, most notably the kids on scooters, motorised go-kart things and those non-Segway things on two wheels.

Yesterday reinforced how much I've improved over the last four months as covered the 10 miles at what felt like minimal effort but at 8:13/mile pace.

Then, when looking at Strava last night I noticed that it said I had recorded 99 runs for 484 miles this year, as follows:
Jan to June - 0
July - 35
August - 22
September - 100
October - 135
November - 93
December - 99

So, despite the fact I had knackered legs from the past two days, I'd been up drinking a lot of gin and it was 1:30am, I set my alarm for 6:00am, to get up and run 1t6 miles to close out the year. I knew I had to really dial back the pace if I was going to make it, and I locked in around 9:30/mile pace and shuffled my way round. I'm pretty sure that's my longest run ever too.

100 runs for 500 miles - I'll take that given how the year started!

Just finished my 2019 running with a muddy 6 miler.
Total miles for the year 861
Total elevation 62,431 ft.

Will likely try Eastbourne park run in the morning to kick off my Marathon training.

Happy new year fellow runners. Hope you hit your goals in 2020

Fantastic. As I said on Strava you really should do a race or two. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at the times it would produce. Generally the race adrenaline plus being paced round makes you 5 to 10% quicker than your training pace.

I'm not a steward but I can tell you that at 45 mins you'd probably not even come last. There are a lot of people who walk park runs. It's either a first step to fitness for them or it's people with injuries who can't keep away. There is always a steward or two walking at the very rear and they are called "tail walkers". If you have lost weight you'll go quicker anyway and you'll be surprised how quickly times become targets rather than millstones. Aiming for sub-40 should be achievable fairly soon. But no need to worry if you don't - there's nothing at all competitive about parkrunners at that pace, it's all postive and encouraging.

Nobody comes last at parkrun, there are tailwalkers at every event - the final person to cross the line to ensure everyone who started has finished. It's always a friendly atmosphere at all of the events. You can see the latest results at Hove Promenade, Preston Park and Hove Park below - there are many slower times and people are there of all shapes, sizes and motivations. Parkrun needs everyone, and is stronger for the diversity in the field.

Thanks mate, very much appreciated. Wasn't all that long ago that the mere thought of 'running' for 90 SECONDS (Level 1 of Couch to 5K) filled me with dread, however pathetic that may sound. In the end completed Level 7 of 9 before I got zapped by gout. The 10K was to raise funds for my niece's twin little boys who were both zapped by leukemia, aged two. 5K would just be for me. And I do love running round Preston Park (soon as it gets light, so schoolkids don't take the piss :lol:)
