Went for it this morning at the Brighton 10k. Most of the discomfort has left the groin but moved to the top of my left glute and lower back. When I'm running it's not too bad but after its painful.

Ran a much more evenly paced race with no Ninja Elephant to compete against. Quickest mile 6:10 (mile 1) slowest mile 6:19 (mile 5) finished in 39:09 so a 1 second pb and 11 seconds quicker than Arena 80 3 weeks ago.

I'll be taking it easy now and running slowly in prep for the Downland Devil 9 & Mince Pie 10. I still have an outside chance of hitting 1000 miles for the year for the first time if I can average 22.5 miles per week for 6 weeks.

How did everyone else get on?

Good running big nuts . I thought it was a great event today, with absolutely perfect conditions. I came in at 46.33 which is a 10k pb for me, and should hopefully put me fairly high up the results table for the 60-plus group.

Sorry for my slow reply. This was an extremely kind offer and I would have taken you up on it if I had been aiming for a particular time. But I really didn’t know what to expect due to my lack of 10k experience so I just had to give it a go and learn what I can do over that distance. Great work on your own time and if you’re ever pacing anyone over 5k let me know and I’ll be there as I have some definite aims for that distance.

As it turned out, I ran well this morning and was really pleased with how I’ve obviously improved since I did the Littlehampton 10k in 46:15 a couple of months ago. I maintained an almost identical pace throughout. My watch never showed anything outside the 4:20 to 4:25 per KM window which brought me home in 43:32. So almost three minutes off the PB if Ninja Elephant could do the honours for me on the table!

That’s a great improvement in the space of 2.5 months and this will really help your 5k Park Run times.

@ Ninja Elephant can you update my PB by 1 second please. As Paul Daniels would say ‘every second counts’.

Congrats to big nuts and The Complete Badger - glorious running for the PBs. I think I'm taking a late place into the Devil 9 miler so the big fella and I can do one final dance for the year.

Welcome jonny.rainbow to the table, feel free to post your other qualifying times and I'll add you in full!

Pleased you can make the Downland Devil now. Speaking to so someone today they think it’s a tougher run than the Mince Pie so I’m expecting some big hills.

Anyone else giving this a go on the first Sunday in December?

Just finished reading a really good running book called 'The Ghost Runner'. I'd highly recommend. It's the story of John Tarrant who was a great runner in the 60's and 70's the only problem being the AAA wouldn't recognise him as he claimed £17 for expenses when boxing. So instead he turned up and ran without a number whilst managing to dodge course officials.

His story takes him from Hereford England to Durban South Africa and is an inspiring tale.

I did it a couple of years ago and yes I’d say it’s tougher than Mince Pie especially if the weather iconditions are bad and it is muddy underfoot. Some of it is very narrow with no over taking so getting a good position soon after setting off is important. There is really nasty camber as you run up through one field and watch out for rabbit holes, there is also a pretty difficult descent - trail shoes recommended, finally a brute of a hill just before the end!
Hope I haven’t put you off - on the positive side the final sprint to the end is great and the breakfast in the farmhouse afterwards is also excellent.
I would do it as well but have another unofficial event that day. It’s a terrific event.

I did the Brighton 10k yesterday, really enjoyed it. Was not sure what to expect as have my ultra training miles in my legs. Weather was just about perfect and the course nice and flat and plenty of room on the course. I got a PB of 48.54 which I am obviously delighted with. Probably the most even paced miles I have ever done, was even able to speed up slightly right at the end!

Ok thanks i did run it like i always run, as fast as i feel i can go without injury!
I am not looking to run races apart from the parkrun as i would have to commit more to it, so should i be trying to do a gentle 75% HR type of run?

I only run once a week at present sometimes 1 in 10 days, should i be running more at my age for any chance of PB's ???

Sorry i am clueless at this running game as i am just a novice and bow to you and the running guru's on this thread, however if we talk football then you all have to bow to me because i am the lord!!!:D

Sorry for not replying sooner, been away and short of time.

Simply, yes you’ll need to run more often to improve times - ideally 3-4 times per week with a mix of sessions including plenty of easy running to build aerobic endurance without taxing yourself too hard, leading to longer recovery times which then in turn limits the benefits you get from the productive sessions (tempo and intervals mostly).

Very good pacing and a great end result. What are your next targets?

Next traget is to run 50k, no time planned , just to get round will be my goal (16th December)
Next year I would like to do a marathon in under 4.20 so under 10 minute mile pace, longer goal is sub 4 hours but that will be a big challange. Will target that @ Brighton marathon, then the following Sunday just "enjoy" the London marathon.
Other than that just to keep running and push for PBs at parkruns, 10k, 10m and HMs!

I would also like do more off road running, or perhaps a triathlon! Things for me to consider.
