Do we need a league table of injuries?

Someone else can maintain that one, though I think @Bozza is currently at the top!

I've decided that my lack of running Mojo needed a boost, so I'm attempting to start swimming regularly again for the first time since I was hospitalised at the end of 2018. Two weeks in, so not enough to impact my running, but I must say I'd forgotten how much I enjoy swimming - I think it is something to do with the repetitiveness of it, and the fact that there is no impact on any joints. Lovely.

Weymouth 70.3 Ironman for me last weekend. The swim was cancelled due to thunderstorms during the night, which helped me really as I did the bike leg much quicker than I expected, just under 3.5 hours.
Then on to the run with the sole aim of catching my friend also taking part. We had set off on the bikes at the same time with him being the stronger cyclist, me the stronger runner (just).
We saw each other twice during the run but as hard as I tried, he crossed the line just as I came round the final bend… 15 seconds ahead.
Serves me right for dawdling in the transition!
Anyway, 1:49:16 for the half marathon distance after the bike, pretty happy with that, especially with all the rain!

Anyone else at Barns Green on Sunday? One of my favourite races but I don’t think I’ve done it since 2016 - I doubt I’ll get near the times I was running back then.

Five weeks away from a marathon so managed a 20 mile run this week - not easy with the weather!

It's been a while since I posted on here but I do actually have a 5K for the table! I took part in a Tracksmith 5K event a couple of weeks ago. There were some very fast runners taking part but they split it into 5 heats broken down by estimated times. I was in heat 3 and actually felt better than I thought I would, given I'd had sinus surgery 4 weeks earlier. I wasn't going for a PB and I optimistically put 19 minutes as my target when I signed up. It turns out I wasn't far off as I came home in 19:06.

Can someone give me the link for the site we use for calculating AG?

I'm also waiting to hear about Boston. I'm fairly confident I'll get in but apparently they had a record number of applications this year and need to cut up to 9,000. There are going to be some unhappy people.

On that note, my marathon PB needs updating on the table. It should be 2:55:38

I'll be at the Amex on Sunday, so no. Barns Green is one of my favourites too, and not just because I've earned two of the coveted Gold medals (back when I was reasonably quick)! Lovely relaxed atmosphere, and a properly challenging course.

Barns Green HM today in 1:46. Very satisfied with that given that I am mid marathon training and ran 20 miles on Tuesday. Also only 3 mins down on my last effort in 2016 and I’m much older now 😁.It really is a great race - the very definition of undulating.

And made it to the Amex with enough time to refuel on a chicken and ham pie before kick off!

A couple of table updates for me if possible.
  • Marathon: 03:11:14
  • Half Marathon: 1:29:59 (just sneaked a sub 1.30)
My new marathon PB was in Berlin on Sunday and my 5th star. I've just signed up to Tokyo in March and then I'll hopefully be done with the majors. It's been 8 years in the making to finish them with 3 being within a year once I've completed Tokyo.

Interesting to see the improvement in time. I've gone from 3:53 (Boston) > 3:48 (London) > 3:33 (NYC) > 3:18 (Chicago) > 3:15 (London 2) > 3:11 (Berlin) with just a bit more mileage towards the later ones. I think the biggest benefit is just knowing your body/nutrition and getting used to the distance. My splits for the past two have been much better, with negative splits in the second half.

I have to say Berlin is my least favorite so far. It just didn't compare to the others in terms of organization and atmosphere.

Curious if anyone has any feedback on Tokyo?

Congrats on your PB, I got mine in Berlin last year. That's great progression in your marathon times too.

That's interesting on your take on Berlin, I thought it was incredibly well organised and had a cracking atmosphere. The expo was a bit too busy but other than that I only had positive things to say about the whole event. Then again, it's my first major, so I can't compare it to other big races.

A couple of friends have run Tokyo. They both said the organisation is absolutely briliiant but the course isn't great.

Thanks @Badger

Maybe I'm being harsh. I just didn't think it was a patch on London or NYC in terms of the atmosphere and felt both Boston and Chicago also had better crowds.

I imagine if I was a more serious runner it would rank higher as it's so flat and fast. It was interesting to see how many Americans were in town for it. It felt like 70% of runners were from the US. I haven't seen that before in London. Maybe they bolt on Oktoberfest.

For atmosphere, course, crowds etc, I think I'm going:

1. London
2. NYC
3. Boston
4. Chicago
5. Berlin

I didn't qualify for and live in Boston which probably impacts that.

London is just hard to beat for me with all the charity places, people dressed up, the crowds etc. Just something magical about it.

That's interesting re Tokyo. I'm 100% going to rock a Mitoma shirt to get the crowns going....

I think London is often talked about as the best atmosphere at a Marathon. Two of my friends ran it this year, both of them having done at least 3 other majors. They both said it was by far the best race in terms of supporters on the street, even though the weather wasn't great.

I have been out to cheer at both London and Boston. Boston seemed great but it's hard to get an overall feel for it because it's so linear and as a spectator I was only able to stop at a couple of places. I did the course tour and I got the impression it must be quiet at the start simply because the road is so narrow. I'll find out when I (hopefully) run it next year.

Amazing effort, well done. As for Tokyo, I'm afraid I can't help - other than to say Japan is the place I'd like to visit most in the world. Ideally with the marathon chucked in!

Foot incision fully healed now and so I gave myself a run out at Farfalle Parkrun in Padova. It was the usual lively Italian welcome and lots of food made for post run. Usually around 20 runners but 54 turned up yesterday on a gorgeous autumnal morning. The Race Director, speaking in English, introduced every newcomer individually to the group. After 20 Scottish, English and American names he said "oh and we have 2 people from Padova" 😆
Stuck on the shoulders of the Atlantan and an Italian. All 60-65. Out sprinted the Amrican but the Italian wasn't having any of that. Happy with sub 25 after 5 weeks out.
