Brilliant run - well done.

I was volunteering at Stanmer (for 13 hours!) Had a great day. I quite possibly gave you your kit bag as I was mainly on the baggage stand.

Definitely a few teething problems and some learnings for the first time this event has run but overall I think it was a massive success. The overwhelming feeling from marathon, 10k and kids race participants was hugely positive - it seemed to be such a happy event - I’ve never seen so many smiles for such a tough event. The atmosphere in the field after the event was so good.
As I say a few learnings but quite a challenge to put on a trail marathon on a new course which threw up a lot of last minute challenges for the organisers.

Thank you for volunteering! These events simply couldn't happen without you guys. (In truth I probably need to do my bit and volunteer on a race soon!)

Good to see you doing your bit (again) Simgull. I went down to the event village at Stanmer to cheer some of my running mates doing the marathon and the 10k. Certainly, all of the participants I know gave really positive feedback (apart from some complaints about a bottleneck just after the marathon start, which I guess they’ll sort out for next time). As you say, there was a really happy buzz among finishers, with most people looking relaxed and smiling as they crossed the line. Very different from the usual pain and anguish at the finish line of Brighton marathon.

The event village was also really chilled for a beer and snack sitting in the sun on the grass in the lovely setting of Stanmer. I definitely had a a FOMO feeling and will consider doing it if it happens again next year.

Thinking of doing this next Wednesday. Good prep for the Phoenix 10k. The South Downs climb will kill me but all good fun.

Debuted the Preston Park Magic Mile yesterday evening with a pleasing 6:10 showing a mile is my current limit of stamina. (1.5 miles in Weakest Link was too much to hold the pace).
Had trouble on attacking the short climb mid way but will be ready for it next month.
Getting a massive return to fitness. Time to not overdo it.

How often do people fall over? Asking for a friend.

My "friend" stacked it again on a rocky/flinty trail the other day and smashed his knee up again. He also did both hands, an elbow and his shoulder. Impressive.

My "friend" seems to do this around once every three to four months, on average. Is he just a clumsy ****er, or is this typical.

Because of the injury sustained, my "friend" probably shouldn't be running right now but he tells me he's on day 881 of a run streak, so is not going to stop now!

Interesting question. I can only recall 3 falls in the best part of 10 years running. Hopefully ‘your friend’ makes a speedy recovery and continues their streak.

Feel like I'm a shoe salesman on here... I've not used them before, they seem a bit marmite, some love them and some well don't, but the Nike Air Zoom Tempo NEXT % are 50% off on the Nike site in some colourways (e.g. Black with red swoosh). So that makes the £90, and you can get an extra £7 from TopCashback. Nike have a great returns policy, you can run in them as much as you like and return within 30 days if you don't like them. I believe they are the 'training' shoe to accompany the Alphafly.

So yeah, I'll have another new pair of trainers soon :dunky:

How old is your "friend"?

In the M65 car, on the way to an event a few years ago, someone said that he had recently fallen over, the third time that year. It was met with a chorus of "me too". We all agreed that we never used to fall over, so concluded that our age may well have been a factor. As we get older, we progressively get nearer to the ground (in many ways!).

Remembering my mum saying "pick your feet up", I decided to work on doing just that. I found that it was necessary to work on the whole body, from the head down, not just simply 'bouncing'. Since then, I haven't had a fall.

Regardless of ageing, I would imagine that regularly running on roads would naturally lead to a lowering of the lift. Generally, the lower the vertical oscillation, the better the running efficiency. Unless, of course, there's a tree root in the way!

I'm not sure I've ever really fallen over. However, I run a lot less than you, and when I do it's generally on firmer surfaces I think (running track or road).

I've gone over on my ankle once, which was due to running at night, not really paying attention, and treading awkwardly on a curb.

I've probably come closest, but not really close, when running at races (I'll include parkrun, but yes I know it's not a race) and training on the track, so running at speed when it's congested and making contact with other runner's feet/pushchairs/dogs.

Thanks for the tip, spoilt only by explaining “marmite”. - is there anyone left who doesn’t understand the reference?

Ps sorry a pet hate of mine alongside those who say “absolutely” or “100%” instead of “yes”

I love mine but you’re right, they are very Marmite.

All my PBs from 5km to HM were achieved in my Tempo Next% and I struggle to think I could match those times even in my Vaporflys and Alphaflys.

It’s far from scientific, but I have a Strava segment near me that I often have a blast down and the fastest time I’ve clocked was in the Tempos, again bettering my time in the VFs and the AFs.

I saw that price this morning and was briefly tempted but I’m currently trying to work through and retire some of the older pairs I have, and I have two newish pairs of Zoom Fly 4s for my faster efforts. This is another Marmite shoe but I think it’s quite underrated. Im. Etta only happy to snap up pairs for around £70 from Keller Sports when Nike still have them at £145ish.

I'd read someone else say they'd set PBs in the Tempo Next% that they couldn't break with Vapor or Alphaflys. I'm just looking for a soft comfy every day shoe.

Interesting to hear you like the Zoom Fly 4s so much, as the 3s were one Nike shoe I was really disappointed with. I found them quite hard and unforgiving, rather than the soft bounciness of the VF, which they're supposed to be the training version of.

I think one of my favourites was the Zoom Fly Flyknit, which was my first Nike (running) shoe, but like the 4%, they're discontinued.
