Official Running Thread

I'm going to be running stat-less for a couple of weeks. I've just shipped my running watch to Romania for repairs, and my Casio needs a visit to Timpsons for a new battery.

How will I cope?!

When I'm dumb enough to forget my watch (quite often) I use my phone. Most desperate when I had neither was waiting for the clock in my car to tip over the minute and then dashing from there and then desperately dashing back to the car again when over. Big asterisk accurate to within a minute had to put on that one

Bloody Worthing!
Well it was all going (too) well................

Been doing quite a lot of hill work lately and turned up to club night with tired legs. Did the warm up, drills and jogs. Then about 10 metres into the first of the 800 repeats at pace, the hamstrings went. Not badly; just a tweak. But enough to put me in a cheerleader (sorry, marshal) role rather than running at Worthing PR tomorrow.

Mustn't grumble and a rest is probably good. Just not too long please.

Tweak should be OK soon enough.
I've arrived early for my 1st place Parkrun effort tomorrow. No-one told me about the pylons.

So today is my birthday and as I’ve mentioned on here I’ve signed up for the vitality 10k. My brother in law who’s running with me has completely humbled me as he bought me a pair of blue Nile Vaporfly.

Ridiculous feeling and ridiculous cost.

Anyone else have any experience of them as a shoe and if so any tips?! On first wearing can’t believe they’re legal.

They’re crap, get rid

Ps - I’ll get rid of them for you if they’re a size 9.5 or 10 😉

A question for the long(er) distance plodders of the NSC parish. Do you ever set out for a run that isn't long, but feels like a complete slog from the off and you feel like you're never going to get there?

I guess you could call it tapering for next Sunday's Moyleman, but I headed up to the SDW YHA today (just under eight miles) and it feel like a REAL effort. Not ideal considering I'd typically do almost double that most weekends (in one run, not over both days!) Granted it was up hill, but even after a couple of miles I was thinking 'I wish this was over' :lolol:

Tapering runs for me are often like that. Lacking in purpose, your mind soon becomes bored and they can definitely drag.

Perhaps try a change of scenery, or run with someone else, or someone different.

I’ve got one more long run left, now I’ve committed to Manchester in 3 weeks.

I’m a little undercooked, but going with the intention to enjoy it and get pissed regardless of what happens Sunday night.

You’re out of luck due to size - they’re an 11 - but you might have a point re being ‘crap’. Such an unusual running and resting position. Going to take some getting used to.

Only worn mine 5 or 6 times. Felt I wasn't driving forward but times were about 30 seconds faster for expected 5k time. Wore them for last summer's Phoenix 10k after 4 weeks no training and they felt like lead boots.

They should make you faster. Just believe and let them do some of the work for you.

I went balls deep on Nike when they had a sale on. I got the Alphafly’s, Vaporfly’s, Pegasus and their Tempo shoe in one hit.

I’ve still not made up my mind yet about them. Yesterday I wore the Alphas for the first time. I can see why they’re quick, but I didn’t enjoy wearing them.

It didn’t feel like a smooth ride, unlike the Saucony Endorphin Speed which for me strikes a lovely balance between quick and comfortable.

I’d like to give the Vaporfly’s another outing soon, they felt quick, so would be interesting to race with them.

The contingent of NSC heading to the North West at the beginning of April is growing, then?!

I've been fine again since then. Just happened to be a one-off, I hope!

Yep - I have what sounds like the very same colourway.

I've had them for a year and worn them a grand total of once, which was on my two-year runstreak anniversary. A frankly ridiculous purchase, given I don't bother with races and Park Runs.

They made my run, which was largely a plod on tired legs, feel very easy indeed. I gave it a bit of effort in a couple of spots and, in the progress ran my fastest ever half-mile, KM, mile and got a second all-time on a Strava segment.

I need to work on getting some fresh legs so I can give them a try out on a 5km, 10km or HM and see what they can do.

Lovely morning for it today. Wasn’t quite sure whether to go for it, in the end I decided to leave the super shoes at home. But as soon as the hooter went I got carried away and was off like a rocket, I don’t know the meaning of a negative split 😂 I thought it was very still but halfway round the first lap was struck by a bit of a headwind.

Overtaken by a few who’d paced it much better than me, and some back and forth with a couple (and a dog) who had paced it worse. Result was a new PB by a few seconds, 19:15 (71.43%). Please can I have a table update knocky1

On the subject of super shoes I managed to pick up a pair of Streakfly, but was only able to get a size 10, which historically has been my size, but for the Alphafly and Vaporfly I’ve gone for 10.5. Used them for a session at the track and a couple of toenails are no longer talking to me, so they’ve gone back 😢

Great running!

A Crawley-based runner I converse with a lot on IG took his Streakflys out for a first go today at his local Park Run and took 37 seconds off his PB!

I resisted the strong urge to buy them, even though they were immediately discounted for premium members at my favourite Keller Sports, as I'm trying to whittle down the 19 pairs of running shoes I currently have in rotation - I'm working on mainly using the older and less-favoured pairs, before I think about buying some more again!

Thanks.

I have to admit when the Streakfly were first released, I was skeptical of them, I couldn't see how they could compete with the Alpha & Vaporfly. However, I then had to consider the retail price was considerably less, priced much like any top range standard trainer. They also look like a "normal" trainer. I feel a bit self concious wearing the Vaporfly or Alphafly, especially in the luminous colourways, as they are so distinctive and I feel you're expected to perform if you don a pair.

After you linked to Edd Bud I've started to get into watching a few YT runners including FOD Runner, Ben Parkes & Ben Is Running. The later ran a low 32:XX 10K in the Sttreakfly and said for him it's going to be his race shoe for up to 10K.

They did feel nice on the track, felt like they did give some extra pop, much like the Vaporfly & Alphafly. My normal track shoe is the Saucony Endorphin Speed 2, which are a well reviewed shoe, and they did make me feel quicker, and lap times were slightly quicker.

Will definitely try and get a pair in the right size, if only because as I mentioned above, they look like a normal shoe and I'd be happy to throw them on for any type of run/race without feeling like I was drawing attention to myself.

I think in some ways I'm fortunate, my running gait seems to result in the outside forefoot grip weaing away quickly allowing me to replace them more frequently!

Fantastic running conditions yesterday and –*it turns out – ideal for getting a Moyleman PB!

A cracking event, as always, with superb marshalling all around the course. I took it fairly easy/sensibly from the off and felt the best I ever have out of the four times I've run Moyleman at the Southease halfway point. Kept with a few marathon and HM runners up the hills that followed, thought of the Beast from the East in 2018 as I went along the Ridgeway and just about kept moving as I trudged up Glynde and Caburn (they don't get any easier!)

Cruised down the golf course road and into the Harvey's yard for a 4:41 finish (previous best was 4:49) and feeling remarkably OK!

A superb day out that I would very strongly recommend to anyone. It's tough, but it's pretty special, too

After 12 months or so of having very little time to run due to work (hospital) commitments, the missus has got back into it the last 4 weeks, joined a gym, and yesterday cracked the 40min mark for 5k which she was over the moon with.
Very proud of her :)
