Blimey - sounds a bit like what I've got. Is it in the heel or the middle portion of the Achilles?
I'd be interested to hear about the laser treatment. I was thinking of looking at shockwave therapy, but I'd not heard of the laser option.

Back of the heel mostly……about 1-1.5 inches off the ground and radiates both sides. Hurts when cold, pain disappears when warmed up but then gradually returns, progressively, with time on feet. Can get pretty painful after 2-3 hours. Eases quickly (overnight rest is enough) ……..rinse and repeat. Just - tentatively - starting to notice a slight improvement.

The podiatrist identified it pretty much immediately as he has a whizzy hand-held ultrasound device that links to an app on his Ipad, so it was very easy to see exactly where and what the problem was.

It’s been like it for over a year……I was able to run through it until July, when a couple of lapped events tipped it over the edge.

I’ve got the first laser session (of a course of 4) on Friday…….will update on effectiveness

It's been niggly for the best part of a year on and off, but in the last few months, it's developed into a hard bony lump on the back of my right heel - and the pain can be quite severe (it caused me major difficulties about 20 miles into the Brighton Marathon last month and I've not been able to run properly since). It's been diagnosed as "insertional Achilles tendinopathy" - essentially at the point where the Achilles joins the bone the tendon has started to calcify and that explains the bony swelling. The calcium deposits irritate the tendon when I run and that causes the pain. I've consulted several physios (each with a slightly different perspective). There are surgical options apparently (which I'm not keen on for various reasons), but otherwise the consensus seems to be that there isn't much that can be done, other than reduce my running load, avoid hills and experiment with various calf exercises.

Very annoying. Bright ideas welcome.

Sorry to hear that. A developing of a hard bony lump on the back of the heel sounds like it's similar to Haglund's syndrome? Did any of the physios rule this out?
Common with runners, very painful and unfortunately I think it's difficult to treat in the short term, other than trying to manage the inflammation. I think Elites that suffer with it usually turn to surgery which is pretty extreme.

Yes, interesting- Haglunds is definitely a possibility (though I’m hoping it’s not as the prognosis seems poor without surgery). My current physio seems pretty convinced it’s the tendon hardening rather than the sort of bony spur you get with Haglunds and he thinks there’s a chance of stabilising it with load management and targeted exercise routines. Failing that I’d be interested to hear how [MENTION=27279]dazzer6666[/MENTION] gets on with the laser treatment.

You sound like the position I was in around July-October last year.

I saw two physios and none could pin it down with any confidence.

I had to stop speed work for a good few months and reduce the hills.

I iced the area most nights, but the most important thing for me was to perform a certain stretch which hits the peroneus muscle.

There are a few that you can use, but the one which really hit the spot meant standing up, but bringing my knee over my toes and leaning down. You can really feel the stretch. I’ll try and find some You Tube links tomorrow.

Didn’t you have a hard lump on the Achilles. If so did it go? Mine cannot be stretched out or left to naturally improve. NHS calls it “degenerative”. Your excellent 2021 running shows there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I’ll talk to my man about it on Friday to see if he has anything to add. I’ve been sore since the session that went in behind the Achilles. Seems to be free but too early to tell.

Ooh if I’ve made the table. I did the Worthing 10k in 44.16. My fastest time in 12 years! That’s coming back from a hamstring pull as well. So well pleased. :bounce:

Yep….these things are getting more and more ridiculous….fascinating to watch though. Absolutely brutal, one winner, and everyone else is classified as a DNF.

It was the A100 from Goring last weekend…1st and 2nd both broke the course record (under 14 hours - well under 9 min miling) and finished with 10 seconds of each other (rolling start, so they were 30 mins apart, not actually racing).
