We played OK in the first half - Jones was very mobile and creative down the left... penalty was a bit soft - but hey, who's going to argue!
Without too many clear cut chances 1-0 was OK, but it looked like we should have done better.
Second half, they got into their stride early, put us under some pressure - stupid short corner move, sweeping break, good low shot from the edge of the box, Roberts half out didn't stand much a a chance (not great positioning though).
Jones off for Lee - WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT ABOUT MCGHEE ??
To be fair we still created some chances late on - header against the bar, decent shot going wide. But then they missed a sitter to take the points... Adam el-Abd did enough to put MacPhee off and he headed onto the bar.
Yes two points dropped, but it could have been worse - some decent football - still too much hoofing though.
Yeates, Macphee, Leon (who stayed on his feet all game on one of the slipperiest pitches of the season!), Jones, Butters all had decent games.
2 points lost - solid first-half by us but whereas against Wrexham we went out and won it early in the second half, this time we sat back, let them come at us and got a bit sloppy.
The equaliser was a bit unlucky though, fine header by Guy almost got the winner for us but they broke upfield with the defence disorganised, we let their version of Leon run too far and he finished well. Virtually a two-goal swing.
We did well to get a 2-3 more scoring chances after that but not quite our night, at least right at the end it was their striker that ended up in the back of our net, not the ball, that would have been a sickener.
Great touches by Yeates, different class to everyone else.
In the first half we created so much, Yeates was everywhere. So why in the second half did we spend so much time hoofing it up in the air for our 5' 4" striker to chase?
We got out of gaol I reckon - they should have scored at the end.
Not sure how Butters was made MotM, he was one of the hoofers in chief.
And I was wrong when I told people that you wouldn't see a worse display than Lee gave on Sunday all season. He managed to be even more shocking tonight.
My reading of the substitution was that after half time Port Vale changed tactically to a 4-3-3. Littlejohn immediately makes a mark and proceeds to put a lot of pressure on our right hand side which is Piercey and El-Abd. Whilst Piercey looked good going forward tonight he has never really been good at backtracking, that put more pressure on the inexperienced El-Abd. McGee needs to shore up that side as Port Vale's left hand side is doing bugger all hence the reason Mayo had a comfortable game and Jones has plenty of space. McGee now has to make a difficult choice as both Jones and Piercey are having decent games. Does he take off the sub Piercey who is putting in a load of decent crosses or Jones who is running well at defenders? I think Piercey's crossing ability gets the nod over Jones, who despite all his good work hasn't really put a threatening cross in all night.
Lee comes on, sticks to Littlejohn, we start getting back into the game a little.
If Hart had not have come off with concussion then this probably would not have happened.
Reckon McGhee got a finger in the eye also. Jonesy was our most incisive player. Maybe he was carrying an injury or something but I doubt it cos he'd just made a pretty useful run down the left flank at full pelt about thirty seconds before he came off. David Lee did not go down well, and added nothing.
It was a game of two crossbars and it could have gone either way. We're woefully short of ideas tho, including how to spread the play the full width of the pitch. The big hoof and the odd nicked goal will only take us so far, and if by some miracle we go up playing like that, we'll be straight back down again. Still at least Port Vale didn't start with Littlejohn cos he looked their trickiest player. Bit of a let-off there. Can we sign him?
