Has anyone got any advice/experience with long term medication for dogs and how it works with insurance and costs etc.?

Ours seems to have developed a long term allergy to something and her belly gets quite badly inflamed. Used to happen late summer now seem year long. Apoquel works very well, but its bloody expensive, I think its working out at ~£100/month, which she has been on for 3-months now. We have insurance but haven't claimed yet, but might need to though if this continues, but her insurance is ~£45/month, i.e. £55 less. What happens if we want/need to claim for this long term?
Our Rosie was on Apoquel for years and you're right, it's chuffing expensive. Unfortunately this is where the insurance companies have you over a barrel. You have to pay your excess to claim, then it becomes a known medical issue, so in the vast majority of cases, if you swap insurers then they'll not cover you for it, so you stick with the insurer you're with and they hike up the cost of your insurance beyond what you'd claim back. We just sucked it up each month, cut out going out to a restaurant once a month to pay for it.

Thanks for this, useful to know.

I am currentlty gving her half the dose to see if that works. Been a week now and I think OK, fingers crossed. If she is still OK in a couple of weeks will stop all together and see how she goes...

Does seem that pet insurance isnt really for long term chronic issues then, they will just ramp the cost up to cover, which on the one hand makes sense, on the other quite fustrating!

My Pumpkin walking along the edge of a sheet of plasterboard to get to her punctured football. She is obsessed with chasing balls. Ive hidden them in the tops of bigger hedges but she climbs up the inside.

Yeah long term problems, insurance becomes a rip off, but we kept it until Rosie was about 10/11 years old, just because of that 'just in case' way of thinking. It just became daft money after that, so we figured we'd just put the insurance money into an account and use it if we ever needed to.

We also adjusted her Apoquel to see what the best dose was. She had it for grass pollen/seed allergies, which apparently is really common in white haired dogs. Every Spring she'd start gnawing her paws off. The vet said a tablet a day, we started off with half and then worked up to three quarters which seemed to work and saved a few bob over the years 😁

Newmarket.
He's so lovely.
His name is Frank
You can buy your very own Frank in the link above.
Sure he costs but you'll never have to bag up Frank's poo and throw it into the branches of a tree ever again.

I vote the World’s Ugliest Dog competition is discriminatory and should be banned

Seriously, how can anyone think these brave and beautiful dogs with health related disabilities are “ugly”?
